Wingate cruises to 70-51 victory at UNC Pembroke

Pembroke, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs played their first game in 11 days Sunday afternoon, going on the road and rolling to a 70-51 victory at UNC Pembroke in NCAA Division II women's basketball action. Wingate improves to 8-3 overall, while the Braves fall to 2-7 on the season.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 43 percent from the field and hit seven-of-17 from three-point range (41 percent)
- UNCP shot 34 percent from the field, connecting on six-of-26 from beyond the arc (23 percent)

FIRST QUARTER

- Alecia Hardy's three gave UNCP a 7-3 lead four minutes into the game

- Melanie Horne's triple with five seconds left got UNCP within three heading to the second quarter

SECOND QUARTER

- A Brianna Braham layup gave UNC Pembroke an 18-17 lead two minutes into the quarter
- Wingate used another 10-0 run to go on top by nine at the 5:40 mark
- Witherspoon had the first four points of the spurt; Averette capped it with back-to-back threes
- Witherspoon's bucket with 22 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a 32-22 halftime lead

THIRD QUARTER

- Two Witherspoon free throws stretched the Wingate advantage to 14 early in the second half
- Horne's three got the Braves within nine, but another Averette triple but the 'Dogs on top 42-29
- Taylor Helms knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead to 14 with 3:34 to go
- Buckets from Jeter and Elena Ingram in the final two minutes made it 53-40 heading to the final frame

FOURTH QUARTER

- Wingate used an 8-0 run to take a 66-46 lead midway through the quarter, capped by Robinson's jumper
- UNC Pembroke got no closer than 17 the rest of the way
