Wingate, N.C.----The top-ranked Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters used a 19-2 first half run en route to a 93-65 victory at Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena Saturday afternoon. LMU improves to 23-1 overall and 17-0 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 12-12 on the season and 9-7 in league play.
Trevon Shaw had 24 points to lead the Lincoln Memorial offense, hitting eight-of-12 shots from three-point range.
Emanuel Terry added 22 points and 11 rebounds, going eight-for-11 from the field, while
Dorian Pinson contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Romeao Ferguson also had 10 points for the Railsplitters.
Freshman guard
Kendrick Tucker (Roanoke, Va.) had a career-high 14 points to lead the Wingate offense, adding three steals and two rebounds. Junior guard
Marco Haskins (Fredericksburg, Va.) also had 14 points to go along with five boards, while sophomore
Jeremy Williams (Salem, Va.) had 12 points on five-of-six shooting from the field. Junior forward
Neico Robinson (Easley, S.C.) contributed 11 points and four boards for the Bulldogs, while senior guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) had nine points.
Wingate scored the first five points on the day, taking a 5-0 lead on Robinson's triple three minutes into the game. Terry's layup tied it, but a Lolar three put Wingate on top 13-10. LMU scored the next eight points, taking an 18-13 advantage on a Pinson layup at the 9:16 mark. A three-point play from Haskins got Wingate within three a minute later, but Lincoln Memorial countered by scoring 19 of the next 21 points, getting nine points from Shaw in the flurry to take a 41-21 lead with 3:18 to go. Shaw's triple with 1:07 left pushed the lead to 22, but a Tucker bucket in the final minute made it 49-29 at halftime.
Logan's bucket early in the second half got Wingate within 18, but LMU responded with a 21-5 run to push the lead to 34. Shaw knocked down three more triples in the spurt, while Terry added eight points including a pair of dunks. Williams scored 10 straight points for the Bulldogs to get the lead down to 26, while a Tucker three made it 87-64 at the 3:43 mark. Wingate would get no closer than 22 the rest of the way.
LMU shot 52.5 percent from the field, connecting on 11-of-23 shots from three-point range (47.8 percent). Wingate shot 33.3 percent from the field, hitting 11-of-37 shots from beyond the arc (29.7 percent). Lincoln Memorial held a 54-31 rebounding advantage and 14-5 edge in second-chance points. LMU also held a 38-10 advantage in points in the paint. Wingate committed a season-low six turnovers on the day.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for an 8 p.m. tip.
