Wingate drops two against Lander despite Swenson’s big day

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore infielder Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) connected on three homers in game two of Thursday afternoon's NCAA softball doubleheader, but it was not enough, as Lander University prevailed 4-2 and 9-8. The Bearcats improve to 6-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-5 on the year.

Game One: Lander 4, Wingate 2

Chandler Carey drove in a pair of runs to lead the Lander attack, with Brianna Surrento adding an RBI. Casey Wooten collected two hits and scored three runs for the Bearcats in game one.

Swenson was one-for-three with an RBI in game one for the Bulldogs, while sophomore outfielder Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added a double and an RBI. Senior Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) and sophomore Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) each contributed a hit and a run scored.

Wooten walked to start the game, stole second, then scored on a Surrento RBI single.

Wingate answered with two runs in the second inning to take the lead. Reep and Hannah started the rally with singles, while Swenson's RBI single plated Reep to tie the game. VonCannon followed with an RBI double to put the 'Dogs on top.

A pair of Wingate errors allowed Lander to score in the third to tie it. Wooten reached on a one-out single in the fifth, then scored on Carey's RBI groundout to give Lander the lead. Wooten scored another run in the seventh on Carey's RBI single to make it 4-2.

McKenzi Ferguson got the win, moving to 3-0 on the year. She allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings, striking out eight without walking a batter. Reep took the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings of work, striking out nine while falling to 2-3.

Game Two: Lander 9, Wingate 8

Sydney Grimes was three-for-four with two RBI to lead the Lander attack in game two, with Ashley Vinson adding a homer and two RBI. Kelli McCormack was three-for-three with two runs scored, with Wooten adding three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Kasey Rogers added a hit, RBI and run scored, while Halie Sorrow collected a double and RBI.

Swenson was three-for-four with her three homers. Her sister Elizabeth Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) also connected on a homer, driving in two runs while sophomore Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) drove in a pair of runs. Junior catcher Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) had three hits and an RBI, while VonCannon was three-for-three with two runs scored.

Singles from VonCannon and Wells, along with a walk loaded the bases for Floyd, who plated VonCannon with a sacrifice fly to deep left to give Wingate a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Emma Swenson led off the second with her first homer of the year to give the 'Dogs a two-run lead.

Lander scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead. Vinson tied the contest with a two-run homer, while a Grimes RBI single and Wingate error put the Bearcats on top 4-2.

The Bulldogs countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. Emma Swenson's second homer of the day made it a one-run game to start the inning. Elizabeth Swenson followed two batters later by connecting on the first long ball of her career, a two-run shot to put Wingate on top 5-4. Floyd's RBI single later in the frame put the 'Dogs on top by two.

The Bearcats again had the answer, scoring four more times to retake the lead. A Rogers RBI single and a wild pitch plated the first two runs to tie it, while a hit batsman and walk with the bases loaded put two more runs across to make it 8-6.

Wingate got within a run in the sixth when an RBI single from Wells made it 8-7, but Wooten scored on a Grimes RBI single in the top of the seventh to give Lander a 9-7 lead.

Emma Swenson's third homer of the game came with one out in the bottom of the seventh, getting the Bulldogs within a run at 9-8.

Vinson got the win, moving to 1-0. She allowed two runs on four hits in three innings, striking out one and walking one. Freshman Sam Hogan (Albemarle, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-1. She allowed eight runs on 11 hits in four innings of work, striking out one and walking one. Ferguson worked the seventh inning to earn the save for the Bearcats.

Wingate is back in action this weekend, traveling to Columbus, Ga. for the Cougar Classic. The Bulldogs play twice Saturday and twice Sunday, with a pair of games against the Cougars and two games against North Georgia.
