Bulldogs explode for 19-6 victory over Golden Eagles in series opener

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored 13 runs in the final three innings Friday night, rolling to a 19-6 victory over the visiting University of Charleston in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate moves to 8-1 on the year, while the Golden Eagles start the season 0-1.

Junior infielder Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) was three-for-four with a homer, four RBI and four runs scored to lead the Wingate offense. Senior designated hitter Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) also had a homer and four RBI, while junior outfielder Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) had a homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Senior outfielder Trent Wynn (New Bern, N.C.) collected a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Freshman outfielder Justin Guy (Greensboro, N.C.) had two hits and two RBI, while junior infielder Zach Little (Troutman, N.C.) registered two hits, an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) also had two hits and three runs scored on the night, while senior outfielder Ty Andrus (Winston-Salem, N.C.) went one-for-one with an RBI and a run scored.

Steven Davis had a homer and two runs scored to lead the Charleston offense. Austin Hathaway added a double and two RBI, while Colton Bauer also drove in a pair of runs. Ethan Hunt collected a hit, RBI and run scored for the Golden Eagles.

Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Andrus started the frame with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third, then scored on Schneider's RBI single. Mellett was hit by a pitch and after stealing a base came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0, while a passed ball and throwing error allowed Schneider to score to put the 'Dogs on top by three.

Charleston answered with a five-run second inning to take the lead. Hunt plated the first run with an RBI single, while Bauer's two-run single tied it. Hathaway followed with a two-run double to left center to put the Golden Eagles on top 5-3.

Wingate cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Little started the frame with a 14-pitch at-bat, ending in a single. He stole second and would eventually score on a sacrifice fly from Andrus to make it 5-4.

Wynn led off the fourth with a triple, then scored on a Schneider RBI groundout to make it 5-5. Little lined a one-out single to right in the fifth, then scored on Guy's RBI groundout to put Wingate on top.

Charleston had the quick response, with Davis connecting on the first pitch of the top of the sixth for a solo shot to right, tying it 6-6.

The Bulldogs countered with a two-run sixth. Mellett started the frame with a sharp single to center. Schneider then connected on his first homer as a Bulldog, a two-run shot to right center to give Wingate an 8-6 lead. After a pair of walks, Little plated Forry with a sacrifice fly. Wynn capped the scoring in the inning with a two-out, two-run single to make it 11-6.

Wingate added three runs in the seventh, starting when Forry connected on his team-best fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right center. Guy added an RBI single later in the frame to make it 14-6.

Mellett started the eighth with a double down the right field line, while a Schneider single and a walk loaded the bases for Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.), who was hit by a pitch to plate the first run of the inning. Brown followed with the big blow, lining a grand slam to right to give the 'Dogs a 19-6 lead.

Senior right-hander Hunter Morgan (Summerfield, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed six runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out seven. Junior right-hander Lane Wildman (Virginia Beach, Va.) tossed two shutout innings in relief, piling up five strikeouts. Robert Fultineer took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking three.

The two teams are back in action Saturday, scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at Ron Christopher Stadium. Game three of the season is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
