Wingate, N.C.----The 22nd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs continued their league dominance Thursday afternoon, cruising to an 8-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action. The Bulldogs win their 63rd straight league match, improving to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Wingate went 2-1 in doubles play, getting an 8-4 victory at two doubles from juniors
Claudia De Andreis (Milan, Italy) and
Sydney Homan (Huntsville, Ala.). Senior
Oroma Womeodu (Memphis, Tenn.) teamed with freshman
Chyi Lee (Wenshan District Taipei, Taiwan) for an 8-6 victory at three doubles to put Wingate on top 2-1 heading to singles play.
Sophomore
Michela Verpelli (Milan, Italy) prevailed 7-6, 7-5 at number one singles, while De Andreis and Lee won by identical 6-4, 6-3 margins at two and three singles. Womeodu picked up a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 victory at number four singles, while sophomore
Marisa Ostoja (Split, Croatia) won 8-3 at five singles. Homan added a 6-2, 6-3 victory at number six singles for the Bulldogs.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting No. 15 Tusculum at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs downed the Pioneers 5-4 in the regular season last year, put TC prevailed 5-4 in the SAC title match.
