Game Recap: Baseball |

Turgeon’s dominant outing, Brown’s walk-off highlight doubleheader split

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior right-hander Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) tossed eight shutout innings in game two of Sunday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne University, allowing just three hits in the 1-0 victory after the Bears took the first game 4-0. The Bulldogs take two out of three in the weekend series, improving to 24-8 overall and 11-4 in the SAC. The Bears move to 20-12 overall and 9-6 in league play.

Game One: Lenoir-Rhyne 4, Wingate 0

Matt Sullivan tossed seven shutout innings for the Bears in game one, while Caleb Beatty hit a pair of homers to lead the offense. Cole Fowler added a hit and two RBI, while Will Jones was two-for-three with a run scored.

Junior catcher Andrew Llewellyn (Moseley, Va.) had the lone hit for the Bulldogs in game one.

After five scoreless innings, Lenoir-Rhyne scored three times in the sixth. Beatty started the frame with a solo homer, while Fowler's two-out, two-run single made it 3-0. Beatty added a solo shot in the seventh to put the Bears on top by four.

A hit batsman and walk started the bottom of the eighth for the Bulldogs. Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) put a check-swing popup in play in the infield, which LR first baseman Alex Reynolds allowed to drop in front of him to start an inning-ending triple play.

Sullivan struck out nine while walking seven to get the win, allowing only one hit in seven innings while throwing 132 pitches to move to 4-1. Landon Whitson worked the final two innings, striking out two without allowing a hit to earn his eighth save of the year. Senior right-hander Hunter Hamilton (Troy, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-2. He allowed four runs on eight hits in seven innings, walking three. Sophomore right-hander Josh Karklin (Waxhaw, N.C.) worked two shutout innings without allowing a hit, striking out two.

Game Two: Wingate 1, Lenoir-Rhyne 0 (8 innings)

Turgeon allowed just three singles in eight innings of a scheduled seven-inning game. Senior Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a hit and an RBI, while sophomore McCann Mellett (Charlotte, N.C.) had two doubles and a run scored. Freshman outfielder Justin Guy (Greensboro, N.C.) also had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Wingate had a chance to jump on the board in the bottom of the first, getting a Mellett double, LR error and Tanner Forry (York, Pa.) single to load the bases, but LR starter John Grigg struck out the next two hitters to escape the jam.

A Guy lead-off single in the fifth and Mellett walk put two on with one out, but Grigg induced an inning-ending double play.

Turgeon retired the last nine hitters he faced in regulation to get the game to extra innings. A lead-off single and sacrifice put the potential go-ahead run at second in the eighth inning, with a walk putting two on for the Bears with one out. Turgeon got a popout and groundout to end the threat.

Mellett started the bottom of the eighth by lining a double to left center field. Schneider was hit by a pitch, while Forry's fielder's choice put runners on first and third for Brown. The senior lined an 0-1 pitch up the middle, plating Mellett to give Wingate the win.

Turgeon allowed just three singles in eight innings of work in his second start of the season, striking out six and walking one. The junior needed just 86 pitches in his eight dominant innings, moving to 3-2 on the season. Grigg allowed a run on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one to fall to 5-1 on the year.

Wingate is right back in action Monday, hosting Erskine at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs wrap up a stretch of four games in three days Tuesday, traveling to Limestone.
