Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves swept a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon over visiting Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference softball action. The Wolves won the opener 7-1, while taking game two 2-0 to improve to 22-12 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 11-19 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Game One: Newberry 7, Wingate 1
Natalie Willis and
Haley Simonds each had a homer and two RBI to lead the Newberry offense in game one.
Ashley Willis added a double and an RBI for the Wolves.
Sophomore infielder
Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) had a double and an RBI to lead the Wingate attack. Classmate
Jessica VonCannon (Locust, N.C.) added a double and a run scored, while freshman infielder
Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) collected a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
Newberry jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer from Natalie Willis.
Wingate cut the lead in half in the fifth. VonCannon started the rally with a one-out double to center, then scored on an RBI single from Swenson to make it 2-1.
The Wolves answered with five runs in the sixth to take a six-run lead. Simonds started the scoring with a two-run homer to make it 4-1. The next two runs scored on a Wingate error, while an Ashley Willis RBI double made the final margin 7-1.
Emily Marchbanks got the win, moving to 9-2 on the year. She tossed four shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out one and walking two. Sophomore right-hander
Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 9-7. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings, striking out four and walking one. The Bulldogs left 11 runners on base in game one.
Game Two: Newberry 2, Wingate 0
Simonds and Natalie Willis each drove in a run in game two, while
Tori Caldwell was three-for-three with two runs scored.
Six different Bulldogs collected a hit in game two, with Cashwell notching a double.
A Simonds RBI double in the first inning plated Caldwell to give the Wolves an early lead. Natalie Willis put Newberry on top 2-0 in the third when her RBI double drove home Caldwell.
Alyssa Ball got the win to move to 9-7. She tossed seven shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out one without walking a batter. Junior right-hander
Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 1-6. She allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.
Wingate is back in action Friday, traveling to Carson-Newman for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The Bulldogs return home Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
