#9 Wingate falls at third-ranked Belmont Abbey Wednesday

Belmont, N.C.----The third-ranked Belmont Abbey College Crusaders jumped out to a 10-1 lead Wednesday night en route to a 10-5 victory over ninth-ranked Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action. The Crusaders improve to 17-5 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 15-5 on the season.

Jakob Rolly had a homer and two runs scored to lead the Belmont Abbey offense. Luke Cureton, Colin Rosenbaum and Kevin Elefante each drove in a pair of runs, while Thomas Yoder added an RBI and a run scored.

Junior infielder Tyler Schneider (Richland, Ind.) had a double and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Junior outfielder Austin Turgeon (Athens, Ga.) was two-for-two with two RBI and a run scored. Junior infielder Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) added two hits and two runs scored, while senior Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) had a hit and a run scored.

A Rosenbaum sacrifice fly and Cureton RBI groundout put Belmont Abbey up 2-0 in the first, while Rolly's solo homer in the second made it 3-0. A McGarry RBI single and Elefante two-run single in the sixth made it 7-0.

Wingate got on the board in the seventh, with Brown scoring on Turgeon's RBI single. Rosenbaum, Cureton and Josh Genthe each drove in a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-1.

Daniel scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to make it 10-2. Turgeon's RBI double started the scoring in the ninth, while Schneider's two-run double made the final margin 10-5.

Griffin Baker got the win, moving to 2-0. He tossed four shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Sophomore left-hander Riley Isenhour (Kernersville, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1. He allowed four earned runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking one.

Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series against Mars Hill at 6 p.m.
