Wingate, N.C.----The UNC Pembroke Braves connected on a grand slam and a pair of three-run homers Tuesday night, prevailing 11-0 at Wingate University in NCAA Division II baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. The Braves improve to 29-12 overall, while Wingate falls to 33-13 on the season.
Connor Grainger had a homer and five RBI to lead the UNCP offense.
Ethan Baucom and
Elijah Helton each added a homer and three RBI for the Braves.
Junior infielder
Reece Daniel (Asheboro, N.C.) had the lone hit for the Bulldogs, a two-out double to center in the bottom of the eighth.
The Braves started the scoring in the second, loading the bases with three straight singles. Grainger cleared them with a grand slam off the scoreboard in left to make it 4-0.
UNC Pembroke scored seven times in the fifth to take an 11-run lead. Baucom started the scoring with a three-run shot to right, while an RBI double from Grainger made it 8-0. Helton added a three-run homer to left center to give UNC Pembroke an 11-0 lead.
Hank Simpson got the win, moving to 4-4 on the year. He tossed three perfect innings, striking out two.
Aaron Biggerstaff tossed four shutout innings to earn his first save of the season, striking out four while allowing a hit and a walk. Junior right-hander
Nick Stegman (Frederick, Md.) took the loss, falling to 4-2. He allowed four runs on five hits in four innings of work, striking out three. Freshman right-hander
Hunter Dula (Troutman, N.C.) tossed two shutout innings in relief, striking out two without allowing a baserunner.
Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a huge three-game SAC series against Catawba at 6 p.m. on ESPN3. The Bulldogs enter the series 16-8 in SAC play, one game behind Catawba (17-7 SAC, 25-20 overall).
