Wingate, N.C.----The top-seeded and 10th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs rolled to a 5-0 victory over seventh-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University in the opening round of the 2018 South Atlantic Conference men's tennis tournament. Wingate improves to 17-5 overall, advancing to Friday's SAC Tournament semifinals in Cayce, S.C. The Bears fall to 13-9 overall.
The Bulldogs swept through doubles play, with the first team All-SAC duo of
Josh DuToit (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Daniel Belsito (Charlotte, N.C.) winning 8-6 at number one doubles. Junior
Duncan Addison (Halifax, Canada) teamed with freshman
Enrico Giacomini (Vicenza, Italy) for an 8-4 win at two doubles, while an 8-3 victory at three doubles from freshmen
Josep Canyadell (Lleida, Spain) and
Matthew Jones (Shrewsbury, United Kingdom) put the 'Dogs on top 3-0 heading to singles play.
DuToit picked up his second win of the day at five singles, prevailing 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore
Tamir Geva (Jerusalem, Israel) won 6-0, 6-4 at six singles to clinch the win. The Bulldogs were up a set at one, three and four singles, with two singles in a third set.
The Bulldogs are back in action Friday in the SAC Tournament semifinals, taking on Tusculum at 1 p.m. in Cayce, S.C. The championship match is slated for Saturday at 12 p.m.
