Reep tosses no-hitter; Weidner adds three-hit shutout as ‘Dogs push winning streak to eight

Charlotte, N.C.----Wingate University sophomore right-hander Aubrey Reep (Eastover, N.C.) tossed her first career no-hitter Wednesday afternoon while adding a solo homer in Wingate's 2-1 victory in game one of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Queens University. Junior right-hander Rachel Weidner (Greenville, N.C.) added a three-hit shutout in game two as the 'Dogs finished off their fourth straight doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 victory, improving to 22-24 overall and 10-8 in the SAC. The 'Dogs have moved up to fourth place in the league standings. The Royals fall to 32-14 overall and 8-10 in league play.

Game One: Wingate 2, Queens 1

Reep was one-for-two with a homer and two walks to lead the offense. Junior outfielder Naomi Sapp (Guyton, Ga.) added a double and an RBI, while freshman infielder Haley Cashwell (Autryville, N.C.) went two-for-four with a run scored.

Queens got on the board in the first, with a walk, sacrifice and error giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.

Wingate tied it in the sixth when Reep connected on her team-best ninth homer of the season, a solo shot to left center to make it 1-1.

Cashwell reached on a one-out single in the seventh, then scored the go-ahead run on Sapp's RBI double down the left field line.

That was plenty for Reep. After allowing the run in the first, she retired the next eight hitters until a one-out walk in the fourth. A strikeout and double play erased a one-out walk in the fifth, with Reep then retiring the side in order in the sixth. Reep got the first two hitters in the seventh, then after a walk, got a flyout to end the game.

Reep moves to 14-9 on the year, striking out seven and walking five without allowing a hit. Courtney Pearson took the loss, falling to 14-8. She allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out six and walking three.

Game Two: Wingate 8, Queens 0 (6 innings)

Reigning SAC Player of the Week Mikayla Hannah (Lancaster, S.C.) was two-for-three with a homer and three RBI to lead the offense in game two. Junior catcher Taylor Wells (Chesterfield, Va.) was three-for-four with two RBI, while Cashwell added three more hits, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore infielder Emma Swenson (Matthews, N.C.) had a homer and two runs scored, while Sapp scored two more runs.

Cashwell led off the game with a single, while an error and walk loaded the bases for Wells, who gave the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead with a two-run RBI single.

Sophomore infielder Jordan Floyd (Wilmington, N.C.) led off the second with a double, then scored on Cashwell's RBI single.

Swenson led off the fifth with her sixth homer of the season to make it 4-0. Hannah followed with a single, with pinch-runner Meagan Martucci (Huntersville, N.C.) scoring on a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs on top by five.

A Cashwell single and Sapp walk put two on for Hannah in the sixth, who connected on her sixth homer of the season making it 8-0.

Weidner picked up her fourth straight win, moving to 6-9 on the year. She struck out seven and walked two while allowing just three hits. Evie Scott took the loss, falling to 0-1. She allowed three runs on four hits in two innings, striking out one and walking one.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, traveling to Mars Hill for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. to wrap up the regular season.
