Queens uses balanced attack to take 11-2 SAC victory over Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----Eight different Queens University of Charlotte players scored a goal, helping the Royals take an 11-2 South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field. The Royals clinch the number two seed in next week's SAC tournament with the victory.
 
For Wingate, sophomore attack Kendall Wells (Elkridge, Md.) and freshman attack Morgan Akers (La Plata, Md.) posted one goal each. Three players scored two goals each to lead the visiting Queens Royals.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

-Queens junior midfielder Katy Miller (Jefferson, Md.), sophomore midfielder Allison Conn (Moriches, N.Y.) and sophomore attack Ally Blood (Jarrettsville, Md.) scored two goals each for the Royals.
-Miller added one assist for a team-best three points. Senior attack Shannon Mansberger (Street, Md.) matched Miller with three points on the strength of one goal and two assists.
-Queens outshot Wingate 30-19 with a 26-12 advantage in shots on goal.
-The Royals held a slight 21-19 edge in ground balls.
-Wingate junior goalie Arion Pierre (Haymarket, Va.) had 15 saves and 11 goals allowed in 60 minutes played.
-Queens sophomore goalie Chase Brokaw (Sykesville, Md.) also went the distance with 10 saves and two goals surrendered.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Half
 
Queens bolted to a 5-0 lead midway through the first half and never looked back. Blood had two of the first five goals for the Royals, posting back-to-back scores to give the visitors a 3-0 lead with 21:23 left. Queens junior attack Katie Wardle (Ellicott City, Md.) finished the run on a free-position shot with 14:23 remaining to make the score 5-0 Royals. Wells (10:58) and Akers (9:10) answered for the Bulldogs to cut the hosts' deficit to 5-2. Mansberger recorded her lone goal five minutes later to make the score 6-2 Queens at intermission.

Second Half

The Royals held the Bulldogs scoreless in the second half. Miller started the second stanza with back-to-back goals (26:49, 18:53) to push Queens' lead to 8-2. The visitors added three goals in the final 15 minutes to settle the final margin.

-Wingate celebrated Senior Day with a pre-game ceremony. The Bulldogs honored senior student athletic trainer Caitlin Russell (Marion, N.C.) and four senior student-athletes: Shannon O'Neal (Severna Park, Md.), Maria Cepeda (Port Charlotte, Fla.), Nicole Hinkle (Fallston, Md.) and Madison LaBarbera (Colchester, Conn.).
                                
NEXT ON THE AGENDA

Wingate is the number four seed in next week's SAC tournament. The Bulldogs host number five seed Tusculum Tuesday at Graham Gill Field. Game time will be announced on Monday. Queens earns the number two seed for next week's SAC tournament (and a bye for Tuesday's quarterfinal round). The Royals will play Friday (at Wingate) versus an opponent to be determined.
