Rollins holds off #18 Wingate in season opener

Winter Park, Fla.----The Rollins Tars scored the game-winner in the 75th minute Thursday night, prevailing 2-1 over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Rollins starts its season 1-0 overall, while the 'Dogs fall to 0-1 on the year.

Rollins struck early, getting on the board in the ninth minute when Stefan Avram scored off a Mathieu Raison assist to give the Tars a 1-0 lead.

Rollins went to halftime with a 1-0 advantage, holding a 7-3 advantage in shots.

Wingate got the equalizer in the second half when All-SAC and All-Region midfielder Elliot Cutts scored his first goal of the season in the 57th minute to make it 1-1.

That was the score until there were just over 16 minutes left in regulation, when Avram again found the back of the net, getting an Andre Nansen assist.
 
The Tars outshot the Bulldogs 16-10 on the night, with each team taking seven shots on goal. Nate Evans and Nico Esposito led the 'Dogs with two shots on goal apiece. Wingate three-time All-American goalkeeper Pablo Jara collected five saves for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, wrapping up the Florida trip by taking on Saint Leo at 2 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla.
