Bulldogs open Queens Fall Classic with emphatic sweep over Rams

Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs hit .466 Friday morning, rolling to a 3-0 victory over Winston-Salem State University on day one of the Queens Fall Classic in NCAA Division II volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-6, 25-16 and 25-16 to improve to 3-0 on the season, while WSSU falls to 1-6 overall.

Senior middle blocker Phoebe Havenaar led all players with 10 kills, needing just 14 swings while hitting .643. Senior outside hitter Hannah Givens hit .667 with nine kills in 12 swings in two sets of action, adding five digs and three aces, while senior Taylor Williams had seven kills in 10 swings, hitting .600 on the match. Senior Anna Holmquist contributed five kills, while sophomore Anne Abernathy had four kills in six swings playing two sets on the day. Junior setter Rachel Alles handed out 33 assists to go along with five digs, three kills and two aces, while senior libero Kori Adams picked up seven digs, three assists, two aces and a kill.  

Three early Givens kills and a Molly Lambillotte ace gave the 'Dogs an early 9-1 lead in set one. The Rams cut the lead to six at 10-4, but Wingate countered with an 11-0 run, getting three Havenaar kills and two Givens aces to take a 21-4 advantage. A Havenaar ace and Williams kill made it 24-6, while a block from Holmquist and Williams ended the frame. Wingate hit .706 in the opening set, with 12 kills and no errors in 17 attacks. Winston-Salem State had three kills and seven errors, hitting -.235.

Two aces from Adams and a Holmquist kill put the Bulldogs on top 4-1 in set two, but a Brittany Carpenter block for WSSU tied it 8-8. Wingate scored the next seven points, getting two Alles aces along with kills from Givens, Havenaar and Adams to take a 15-8 lead. Two Williams kills and a Holmquist kill made it 22-12, while kills from Holmquist and Givens put the 'Dogs on top 24-15. Givens ended the frame with a kill, with Wingate hitting .483 in set two with a match-high 18 kills in the frame.

The Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to take an 8-5 lead in set three, getting a Lambillotte ace along with kills from Havenaar and junior middle blocker Lynnlee Mather. A Williams kill and two aces from Shannon Kasprak put the 'Dogs on top 13-7, while a kill and a block from Holmquist made it 16-9. Kills from Lambillotte, Mater and Alles capped a 4-0 run that gave Wingate an eight-point lead, while a Havenaar kill and Kasprak ace made it 24-16. Alles finished off the match with a kill.

Wingate hit .466 for the match, with 43 kills and nine errors in 73 attacks. WSSU had 17 kills and 14 errors in 70 attacks, hitting .043. Wingate piled up 14 aces, getting three apiece from Givens and Kasprak.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday evening, taking on Converse at 5:15 p.m. Wingate wraps up the Queens Fall Classic Saturday morning at 10 a.m., taking on Augusta.
