Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs played their 2018 home opener Wednesday evening at Pride Park, playing to a 0-0 draw against visiting Chowan University in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate moves to 1-1-1 on the season, while Chowan goes to 1-0-1 overall.
The first half saw the Bulldogs hold a 7-3 advantage in shots, with the Hawks registering the lone shot on goal. A
Mitchell Levi shot on target in the 34th minute was turned away by Wingate All-American goalkeeper
Pablo Jara.
Wingate held a 5-3 edge in shots in the second half, taking both shots on frame.
Dylan O'Kane was the first Bulldog to put a shot on target in the 76th minute, with Chowan keeper
Elliott Chadderton collecting the save. Oscar Perez put a shot on frame four minutes later, but Chadderton was again there for the save.
Wingate took five shots in the two overtimes, compared to just two by Chowan. Neither team had a shot on goal, but Wingate's
Adam Robinson nearly had the winner in the 94th minute when his shot from the top of the box hit the crossbar.
The Bulldogs outshot the Hawks 17-8 on the day, with a 2-1 edge in shots on goal. Wingate's
Marco Sellen led all players with four shots in the match.
Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Flagler at 5 p.m.
