Wingate salvages 1-1 tie against Mountain Lions on Zanardi’s 89th minute strike

Wingate, N.C.----The Concord University Mountain Lions were looking to get away with a victory Wednesday night in NCAA Division II women's soccer action at Pride Park, but Wingate University sophomore Morgan Zanardi found the back of the net with 90 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The Bulldogs and Mountain Lions played to a 1-1 draw after two scoreless overtimes, with each team moving to 2-0-1 on the season.

Concord struck first in the 11th minute when Pilar Elias scored her first goal of the season off a Leah Foster assist. The Mountain Lions took the 1-0 lead to halftime, with each team taking five shots in the opening 45 minutes.

Wingate finally got the equalizer with 1:29 remaining in regulation. Zanardi took a feed from McKenna DeLong and fired one from over 25 yards out, finding the left corner for the incredible equalizer to send it to overtime.

The Bulldogs were the aggressive team throughout the 20 minutes of overtime, registering nine shots including five shots on goal, but could never find the back of the net. Of the several good opportunities, the best came in the 104th minute when Wingate earned a penalty kick, but Kimmi Moore's attempt hit the post.

The Bulldogs finished the night with a 21-13 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Nine of Wingate's 21 shots came in the overtime periods, as did three of the four corner kicks for the 'Dogs. Wingate's Colleen Zickert led all players with five shots, while teammate Alicia Rubio Garcia collected four shots, including two shots on goal.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Lander at 7 p.m.
