Bulldogs wrap up first half of SAC play with 67-60 road win at Queens

Charlotte, N.C.--- The Wingate University Bulldogs pulled away after halftime Wednesday night en route to a 67-60 victory over the Queens University Royals in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night in the Levine Center. Wingate improves to 13-4 overall and wraps up the first half of SAC play at 8-2. The Royals fall to 6-10 overall and 1-9 in the SAC.

KEY STATS

- Wingate shot 54.7 percent from the field on the afternoon, Queens shot 37.9 percent
- The Royals shot 40 percent (six-for-15) from three-point range, the Bulldogs did not make a three point shot
- Wingate held a dominant 42-23 rebounding advantage and 21-15 edge in second-chance points
- WU outscored QU 38-30 in the paint
- The 'Dogs converted on nine-of-13 free throws while the Royals were 10-for-17 at the line

KEY BULLDOGS

- Caroline Averette had 17 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists
- Danasia Witherspoon had 14 points, 10 boards and three assists
- Courtney Robinson contributed 10 points and two assists, going four-of-six from the field

FIRST QUARTER

- Wingate got on the board first, converting a Royals turnover to a Robinson layup
- The 'Dogs would take the early 12-7 lead on a Jeter bucket in the paint  
- Queens would cap the scoring with a triple from Carolina Bernardeco, trailing 11-19

SECOND QUARTER

- The Royals cut the lead to four on a Kristian Eanes jumper
- Wingate pushed the lead back to seven on a Jeter jumper and free throw
- A Witherspoon jumper in the final seconds gave the 'Dogs a one point lead heading into the half 30-29

THIRD QUARTER

- The Bulldogs utilized a 10 point third quarter from Averette, outscoring the Royals 25-16
- Wingate would push the lead to eight with 7:17 to play in the quarter, with a Witherspoon jumper coming in the flurry
- A Stephen layup gave WU a 10 point lead with 10 minutes left to play

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Taylor Helms layup started the scoring in the final frame
- The 'Dogs took the largest lead of the game at 61-48 off a Jordan Quick layup with 6:14 remaining
- The Royals would cap the scoring with a three pointer from Ceara Leavai, falling 60-67 to the Bulldogs
