Wingate, N.C.----The nationally-ranked Wingate University swimming teams completed a sweep of Bluegrass Mountain Conference rival Carson-Newman University Saturday at the WU Natatorium (complete results). The number nine Wingate women won a 216-99 decision, while the number 20 Bulldog men earned a 196-119 victory. Both Carson-Newman teams are ranked number 17 in the NCAA Division II.
 
Wingate junior Iran Almeida (Roanoke, Va.) won three events (two individual, one relay) for the hosts Saturday. After helping the Bulldogs set a pool record in the 400 Medley Relay Friday, Almeida touched first in the 50 Freestyle (20.95) and the 100 Butterfly (49.23). Also, he swam the third leg as the Bulldogs won the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:33.41.
 
On the women's side, the Bulldogs started the day by posting a new pool record in the 200 Medley Relay. Wingate posted a time of 1:46.36. Team members include sophomore Anna Miram (Ludvika, Sweden), junior Anne-Sofie Nissen (Copenhagen, Denmark), junior Maike Hoener (Langlingen, Germany) and senior Abby Kosic (West Chester, Pa.).
 
Miram joined Almeida with three victories Saturday (one individual, two relay). After the record-setting 200 Medley Relay triumph, Miram touched first in the 100 Backstroke (56.52). She finished her day by swimming the first leg as Wingate won the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:34.49) in convincing fashion.
