Wolves use late run to knock off Bulldogs

Newberry, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs trimmed a 16-point deficit to two in the fourth quarter, but Newberry College closed the game on a 19-8 run to knock off Wingate 64-51 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action at Eleazer Arena. Newberry improve to 15-9 overall and 9-8 in SAC play while the Bulldogs fall to 18-7 overall and 13-5 in league play.

- NC shot 42 percent from the field, connecting on five-of-21 from beyond the arc (24 percent)
- Wingate shot 25 percent from the field, going three-for-13 from three-point range (23 percent)
- The Bulldogs held a 43-36 rebounding advantage

FIRST QUARTER

SECOND QUARTER

- A Robinson jumper started the scoring to get the 'Dogs within one at 14-13
- The Wolves scored the next six; with Golden making two buckets in the stretch
- A Quick layup made it 20-15 midway through the quarter
- An Averette jumper at the four-minute mark made it 22-17
- Newberry would score the final four points in the quarter
- A McCarty layup and two free throws from Golden made it 28-19 Wolves at the half
 
THIRD QUARTER

- McCarty scored the first eight points of the half, giving Newberry a 36-19 lead at the 7:18 mark
- WU went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to six, with Jeter and Snow scoring buckets in the flurry
- A pair of free throws from Essex stretched the Wolves lead to 40-31
- Witherspoon made two from the charity stripe to make it a 42-34 Newberry lead with 10 minutes left to play

FOURTH QUARTER

- A triple from Britten stretched the Wolves lead to 10 at the 6:56 mark
- Wingate went on an 8-0 run, started by a Quick layup
- A Jeter layup capped the rally, making it a two-point game with five minutes left
- In the final four minutes of play Newberry went on a 19-8 run
- a Lyons layup capped the scoring for the night

- Wingate returns home next Wednesday, hosting Queens at 6 p.m.
