Pierpont’s game-winner gives #20 Bulldogs thrilling double OT victory against Rollins

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior Gary Pierpont scored midway through the second overtime Saturday afternoon, giving the 20th-ranked Bulldogs an 11-10 victory over visiting Rollins College in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse action at Graham Gill Field. Wingate moves to 2-1 on the year, while the Tars fall to 1-1 overall.

"Today was a hard-fought grinding type of win that we really needed as a team. Rollins is a very well-coached strong team that fought hard all game. We are proud of the boys and their ability to bounce back from last week's loss. We have to move forward now and prepare for a strong upstart team from Palm Beach Atlantic next week."

- Wingate out-shot Rollins 44-30; Rollins held a 23-21 edge in shots on goal
- WU had 24 turnovers compared to 22 Rollins turnovers
- The 'Dogs held a 40-35 advantage in ground balls

FIRST PERIOD

- Ryan Dunn got the Tars on the board in the first minute, but goals from Padden and Joe Cooper put WU on top
- All three goals in the period were scored in the first two minutes

SECOND PERIOD

- Llerandi scored off an Oremerod assist in the opening minute to make it 3-1
- Blake Buell's goal tied it at three with 10 minutes to go
- Goals from Piazza and Llerandi gave the 'Dogs a 5-4 advantage at the 7:34 mark
- Kyle Sudol and Joey Cinque scored in the last seven minutes to give RC a 6-5 halftime lead

THIRD PERIOD

- Goals from Padden and Gronbach gave the 'Dogs a 7-6 advantage in the opening minute of the second half
- A goal from Cinque gave Rollins an 8-7 lead, but Llerandi tied it 8-8 with a goal at the 7:42 mark
- The teams headed to the final frame tied at eight

FOURTH PERIOD

- Dunn scored the first two goals of the frame to put the Tars on top 10-8 at the 8:03 mark
- Padden scored with 5:26 to go to get the Bulldogs within a goal
- Pierpont found the back of the net with three minutes left in regulation to tie it

FIRST OVERTIME

- Gronbach took both WU shots, with one being saved and the other hitting the post
- Cordero picked up a key save in the final 30 seconds to send it to a second overtime

SECOND OVERTIME

- With 1:52 to go, Padden found Pierpont on the left side of the box
- The junior ripped one past the goalie to give the 'Dogs the 11-10 victory

- Wingate hosts Palm Beach Atlantic next Saturday at 4 p.m.
- The 'Dogs wrap up a four-game home stand March 6, hosting Florida Southern at 7 p.m.
