Newberry scores four in the ninth to eliminate Wingate in 6-5 SAC Tourney heartbreaker

Kodak, Tenn.----The top-seeded and eighth-ranked Newberry College Wolves scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, rallying past the fifth-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs for a 6-5 victory on day four of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament. Newberry improves to 41-13 overall, advancing to championship Monday, while the Bulldogs are eliminated from the tournament, falling to 33-18 on the season.

- A Forry walk and Dula single put two on for the Bulldogs
- Clark's two-out, two-run double tied it

SIXTH INNING

- Schneider and Forry started the inning with back-to-back singles
- Clark put Wingate on top with a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-2

EIGHTH INNING

- Clark was hit by a pitch with two outs
- He scored on Guy's RBI double to give Wingate a 5-2 lead

NINTH INNING

- Two walks and a Schneider single loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth for Wingate
- A line drive turned into a double play, while a groundout ended the frame and left the game at 5-2
- Dula got a groundout and strikeout to start the bottom of the frame
- A walk and single put runners on first and third with two outs
- Danton Hyman's RBI double got the Wolves within two
- A Wingate throwing error on the next play allowed two runs to score, tying it at five
- Tyler White followed with a walk-off RBI single, giving the Wolves the 6-5 victory

WRAPUP

- Quinton Driggers got the win, moving to 9-0
- He allowed a run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking two
- Dula took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits in two-thirds of an inning
- Nash threw 87 pitches, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings, striking out two
- The redshirt junior threw 91 pitches to get the win in the opener Thursday evening
