Wingate rolls to 5-1 season-opening victory over Chowan

Wingate, N.C.---- The Wingate University Bulldogs scored four goals in the first 39 minutes of the game Saturday evening, rolling to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Chowan University Hawks in NCAA Division II men's soccer action at Pride Park. Wingate begins 1-0 on the season, while Chowan moves to 0-1 overall.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH HAMILL

"I Definitely felt that with eight or nine freshmen starting the enthusiasm was there, and the pace was there. Scoring goals, that's massive. I think we had four different guys score. That's important, it's good for their confidence."
 
KEY STATS

- Wingate held a 20-11 advantage in shots
- The Bulldogs had nine shots on goal, the Hawks had seven

Paul Ngongo had a pair of goals for Wingate, also handing out an assist

FIRST HALF

- Wingate jumped on the board just 6:36 into the contest when Fahlen Bruun scored his first goal as a Bulldog, lining one home off a rebound
- Ngongo scored his first goal just two minutes later of a Fahlen Bruun assist
- Kuper found the back of the net in the 28th minute off a cross from Ngongo
- Sam Hall Heaser got the Hawks on the board in the 31st minute
- Wingate took a three-goal lead to the locker room when Ngongo beat his defender and drilled it into the back of the net with just under six minutes remaining in the opening half

SECOND HALF

- In the 84th minute Colletta settled a Mattia Ditommaso cross in the left corner and tucked it inside the near post
