Newberry rides hot start to 65-54 victory over Wingate

Box Score Newberry, S.C.---The Newberry College Wolves outscored visiting Wingate University 18-9 in the first quarter en route to a 65-54 victory in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening in Eleazer Arena. Newberry improves 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in league play.
 
KEY STATS

- Newberry shot 45.1 percent from the field on the evening, Wingate shot 44.4 percent
- The Wolves shot 38 percent (eight-for-21) from three-point range, The Bulldogs shot 38 percent from beyond the arc (three-for-eight)
- Each team collected 25 rebounds
- The 'Dogs had a 28-22 edge in points in the paint
- Wingate held an 8-6 advantage in second-chance points
- WU had 25 turnovers, Newberry had 21
- Wingate converted those 21 turnovers into 23 points
- Newberry converted Wingate's 25 turnovers into 18 points
- The Wolves hit 11-of-13 free throws while the Bulldogs went 11-for-14 at the line

- Hannah Clark had 14 points, going four-for-four at the free throw line
- Destiny Coleman added 12 points, going five-for-nine from the field
- Jasmine Stephen added 10 points to round out Wingate's double-digit scorers
- Teliyah Jeter had seven points and six boards
Elana Ingram contributed five points, three rebounds and four steals

NOTES 

- Wingate moves to 38-14 all-time against Newberry
- WU is 15-9 when facing the Wolves in South Carolina
- 54 points for the Bulldogs ties the second lowest this season

FIRST QUARTER

- Wingate got off to a hot start with a quick 4-0 lead, getting buckets from Stephen and Daphney Saylor
- Newberry got on the board at the 7:48 mark
- The 'Dogs answered with a Coleman layup
- The Wolves finished the frame on a 16-3 run in the final five minutes
- Talia Roberts lead Newbeerry with 12 points in the first 10 minutes

SECOND QUARTER

- A Coleman jumper got WU on the board first
- The Wolves pushed their lead to 15 with just under seven minutes remaining
- Wingate went on a 8-0 run over the next two minutes of play
- Coleman scored six points in the flurry
- Newberry scored the only two baskets in the final five minutes of the half
 
THIRD QUARTER

- Newberry started the second half with back-to-back threes
- At the midway point a Stephen three-point got WU within 11
- A Courtney Virgo bucket Newberry back on top by 14
- Wingate would go on a 9-2 run over the next four minutes of action
- Saylor capped the run with a free throw with 46 second left

FOURTH QUARTER

- With six minute to play a Clark layup got the 'Dogs within nine
- At the midway point Wingate cut the lead to four with buckets from Clark and Jeter
- Virgo's layup put the Wolves on top 54-48 at the 4:41 mark
- WU got another pair of buckets from Jeter and Clark to make it a one possession game
- A Newberry three extend the lead to five with three minutes to go
- The 'Dogs got a layup from Stephen to cut the lead to  57-54
- Wingate would get no closer
- NC ended the game on a 8-0 run; getting six points from the charity stripe

UP NEXT

- The Bulldogs head to Tusculum Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip 
- Wingate returns home next Wednesday to host Queens
- WU plays host to the Eagles of Carson Newman the following Saturday
