Jefferson City, Tenn.----In a six-plus hour meet with a postseason vibe, the Wingate University Bulldogs claimed a Bluegrass Mountain Conference dual meet sweep over the host Carson-Newman Eagles Saturday in Maddox Pool (
complete results). The Bulldog men rallied for a 158-157 victory due in large part to a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 Individual Medley. The Wingate women prevailed 175-140.
The Eagle men saw a 2,555-day home winning streak end Saturday. The Carson-Newman men had won 23 straight home dual meets over a seven-year span. On the women's side, Carson-Newman had a 757-day home winning streak conclude as well. The Wingate Bulldogs were competing for the first time since day two of the NCAA Division II national championship meet in March.
Wingate junior team captain
James Reindl won the men's 400 Individual Medley with his triumphant time of 4:08.36. Teammates
Jonas Soerensen (4:09.18) and
Felix Grieb (4:12.75) earned the 400 IM silver and bronze medals, respectively.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH
KIRK SANOCKI
"Obviously, the 400 Individual Medley sweep was pivotal…putting us in a position to win the men's meet with a silver medal in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Our men had to overcome several stumbling blocks. In the first session, the disqualification in the 400 Medley Relay hurt us."
"Also, our depth is deceiving. There is a trade-off by having large squads in the traditional dual meet format…where a premium is placed on winning events. Both schools were missing key student-athletes. Our guys overcame the obstacles to put us in a position to win."
"Sophomore
Marcel Snitko won the 200 Freestyle to start us on the comeback trail. The 400 IM sweep kept the momentum in our favor. After a long day on the bus…and all the challenges we faced…our guys found a way to keep their energy high all day."
"One thing I liked the most…this meet was a perfect experience for our newcomers. One thing successful swimmers learn in college is that times will fluctuate, depending on our training patterns and other variables. The bottom line…you must get your hand on the wall first. They (the newcomers) understood this today…and we picked up a dual meet victory."
"Our women's team did an amazing job as well. We finished the first session up four points (76-72) and we trailed Carson-Newman after the first event (200 Medley Relay) of the second session. The same statements apply to both meets…in a traditional dual meet format, there is a huge premium placed on winning events."
"Carson-Newman's frontline swimmers are outstanding, both on the women's side and the men's side. The C-N women picked up some key victories in the first session. In the second half of the second session, our women were swimming in some of their strongest events. We had some success…and pulled away in the late stages."
THOUGHTS FROM SOPHOMORE
MARCEL SNITKO (Bad Zwischenahn, Germany)
"The feeling I got when I touched the wall first (in the 200 Freestyle) was like no other…pure euphoria. I knew that winning that race would be crucial for the meet win, so I had to go all in. While swimming that race, the only thing that was going through my mind was that my team was counting on me and seeing them cheering for me literally gave me wings."
"It was hard, but the feeling after was definitely worth it…seeing all those happy faces just made me so proud to be a part of this wonderful team. The energy on the side of the pool was unreal. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it. Everyone was jumping and screaming like crazy and it just motivated every one of our swimmers to swim their hearts out…and the feeling of both teams winning made everyone so happy and proud."
"It's nice to see that all of those hard practices we went through have already paid dividends…and we're motivated to work even harder from now on."
"We thought the Covid-19 regulations would be hard to follow, but it was actually not that bad. The only thing that was affecting our swimming was a shorter warm up and warm down. Outside of the pool, wearing masks and social distancing was easy to overcome. Everyone was doing their part and the actual racing was still the same like it was prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Today was simply amazing! I wouldn't want to be a part of any other team."
