‘Dogs ride suffocating defense to 51-47 victory over Tusculum in regular season finale

Wingate, N.C.---The Wingate University Bulldogs held visiting Tusculum University to 22.5 percent shooting from the field Saturday afternoon, prevailing 51-47 over the Pioneers in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball inside Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs improve to 17-12 overall and 11-11 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 21-7 overall and 16-6 in league play.

- Wingate shot 48 percent from the field, Tusculum shot 22 percent
- The Bulldogs shot 22 percent (two-for-nine) from three-point range, the Pioneers shot 18 percent from beyond the arc (eight-for-44)

FIRST QUARTER

- Wingate opened the game on an 8-2 run

SECOND QUARTER

- Mia Long started the second frame with a three for TU
- Clark answered with a jumper at the nine-minute mark
- After a pair of TU free throws, an Ingram layup made Wingate's lead 14-9
- Long made another layup for the Pioneers with 7:18 to go
- Wingate got a Jeter bucket, then layups from Troutman and Clark to push the lead to nine
- Tusculum made a pair of threes to make it 22-17 with 4:39 to go
- The 'Dogs got a Troutman layup with 4:08 to go to push the lead back to seven
- TU hit a three and got a layup from Jaila Anwine to make it a two-point game with 1:19 on the clock
- A Coleman three in the final minute made it a 27-22 lead at halftime

THIRD QUARTER

- Tusculum started the second half on a 10-0 run
- A Long three with eight minutes to go tied it
- The Pioneers capped the flurry with a Kasey Johnson free throw at the 6:24 mark
- Wingate answered with an 18-0 run spanning the next five minutes of action
- Willis started the run with a layup at the midway point
- A Clark three and a Saylor layup put the 'Dogs up 34-30 with 4:36 to play
- Jaxson Douglas, Ingram and Clark all made free throws during the run
- The rally was capped by a Saylor layup with 1:21 to go, putting WU on top 45-30
- Miller and Long made buckets for Tusculum in the final 90 seconds of the frame
- The Quarter was capped by a Saylor free throw to give Wingate 47-34 lead

FOURTH QUARTER

- Tusculum outscored Wingate 13-4 in the final frame
- The Pioneers opened the quarter with an Arnwine three
- Jeter made a jumper with 7:20 to go giving the 'Dogs a 12-point lead
- A Hutchinson three with six minutes to go made it 49-40
- Long hit a pair free throws and a three to pull the Pioneers within four by the midway point
- An Arnwine layup with 2:14 left pulled the Pioneers within two
- The final bucket of the game was a Jeter layup in the final seconds, giving Wingate the 51-47 advantage

UP NEXT

- The Bulldogs have clinched the six seed in the SAC Tournament starting Wednesday
