Terrapins use big second half run to pull away from Bulldogs

College Park, Md.----The Wingate University Bulldogs had a four-point lead nine minutes into Friday afternoon's contest at the University of Maryland, but the Terrapins used big runs in each half to pull away for a 100-58 victory in NCAA men's basketball action. The contest, which was scheduled Wednesday afternoon, is a regular season contest for Maryland and an exhibition for the Bulldogs.

KEY STATS

- Maryland shot 60 percent from the field; Wingate shot 30 percent
- The Terrapins shot 64 percent in the second half, hitting six-of-12 threes
- The Terps hit 12-of-26 threes on the day; the 'Dogs went six-for-24 from three-point range (25 percent)
- The Terrapins held a 42-28 rebounding advantage; WU held a 5-4 edge in second-chance points

- The contest was scheduled after Wingate's Saturday game against Anderson was postponed

FIRST HALF

- Two Cottingham free throws and a Sio bucket gave Wingate an early 4-0 lead
- An Aaron Wiggins triple at the 16:01 mark put the Terps up 7-6
- Rashaard Pringle answered with a three top put WU back on top, but Jairus Hamilton's three gave UM a three-point lead
- The 'Dogs scored the next seven points to take a four-point advantage
- Cottingham started it with a bucket, while Sio's jumper put the Bulldogs on top
- Sio buried a three at the 11:44 mark to make it 16-12, forcing a Maryland timeout
- The Terrapins answered with a 12-2 run, taking a 24-18 lead on a Hakim Hart triple with 8:19 to go
- Sio pulled the 'Dogs back within three with a triple on the other end
- Two Clark free throws made it a one-point game with 6:59 remaining
- Maryland countered with a 22-5 run, taking a 46-28 lead on two Wiggins free throws with 1:12 left
- Threes from Sio and Priest in the final minute pulled the Bulldogs within 13 at halftime, making it 47-34

SECOND HALF

- Maryland's 11-0 run early in the second half made it a 60-35 game with 16:17 left
- James Graham pushed the lead to 31 with 11:30 remaining
- Sio answered with a bucket to cut the lead to 29, but Marcus Dockery's layup with 9:49 left made it 77-46
- Wingate would get no closer than 30 the rest of the way
- The Terps outscored the Bulldogs 53-24 in the second half

- Wingate returns to SAC play next week, playing three straight conference road games
- The Bulldogs are at Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday and at Carson-Newman the following Saturday
