Bulldogs drop double-overtime heartbreaker at Newberry

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves found the end zone in the second overtime Saturday afternoon, then forced a Wingate turnover to claim a 41-35 victory over the Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference football action. Newberry improves to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in league play.

FIRST QUARTER

- A Deshun Kitchings 31-yard TD run gave the Wolves an early 7-0 lead

SECOND QUARTER

- On third and 15, Dre Harris's pass was deflected by a WU defender into the hands of Kitchings for an 80-yard TD to make it 14-0
- An Evans punt pinned the Wolves inside their own one later in the quarter
- After a three-and-out, the Newberry punt out of the end zone went just 14 yards
- Peoples scored from five yards out to make it 14-7
- Harris hit Bobby Irby for a 15-yard TD to make it 21-7 with five minutes left in the half
- Wingate answered with a 74-yard scoring drive
- A Peoples 12-yard run started it, while Crocker hit Ryder Martin for 16 yards
- Crocker connected with Desor for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 21-14
- The Wolves got a 28-yard TD run from Olin McCurry with 28 seconds left to make it 28-14

THIRD QUARTER

- The Bulldogs got on the board on their first possession of the second half
- A 13-yard pass to Martin and 11-yard Peoples run got the 'Dogs inside the NC 20
- Robertson drilled a 25-yard field goal to cut the lead to nine
- A 10-yard Irby TD run capped a 75-yard Newberry drive to make it 35-17

FOURTH QUARTER

- Wingate cut into the lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter
- Peoples scored from a yard out to cap a 38-yard drive
- The Bulldogs added the two-point conversion to make it 35-25
- WU forced another three and out and took over at the 50
- Robertson's 24-yard field goal made it 35-28 with 7:26 left
- Another Evans punt pinned the Wolves inside their own 10
- A botched snap was covered up by Bowles in the end zone for a Wingate touchdown to tie it with four minutes to go
- The 'Dogs got the ball at their own 35 with 2:24 left in regulation
- Wingate was unable to produce points, sending the game to overtime

FIRST OVERTIME

- A botched snap on a field goal attempt ended Wingate's opening drive in OT
- The 'Dogs forced a Newberry fumble that was recovered by Armwood to force a second OT

SECOND OVERTIME

- Cade Ruff hit Bryson Woodruff for a 25-yard touchdown on the first play of Newberry's second possession
- The Wolves picked off Crocker in the second overtime to end it
