Bulldogs blast three bombs; Mitchell tosses complete game as Wingate advances to SAC finals

Kodak, Tenn.----Wingate University redshirt freshman right-hander Austin Mitchell held Carson-Newman University to two runs Monday afternoon as the Bulldogs handed the Eagles their first loss of the SAC Tournament on day five of SAC Tourney action. Wingate prevailed 8-2 to improve to 29-12 overall and advance to the final game of the SAC Tournament Monday afternoon. The Eagles fall to 27-15 overall.

KEY STATS

- Wingate out-hit Carson-Newman 10-9 on the day
- The 'Dogs had four of the seven extra-base hits and three of the five homers
- The Bulldogs turned three double plays on the day
- Each team committed an error
- Wingate left six on base; the Eagles stranded four

KEY BULLDOGS

- McCann Mellett was two-for-three with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored
- Justin Guy added a homer and two RBI
- Jed Bryant also drove in a pair of runs
- Andrew McKay added a hit and an RBI
- Carson Simpson went two-for-four with two runs scored
- Michael Dansky and Gehrig Christopher each added a hit and scored a run

THIRD INNING

- Simpson ripped a one-out single up the middle
- Mellett followed with a two-run blast down the right field line to give WU a 2-0 lead

SIXTH INNING

- Mellett was hit by a pitch to start the inning
- He moved to second on Dansky's sacrifice bunt
- Bryant's two-out RBI single plated Mellett to make it 3-0
- Tyler Thompson got CN on the board in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to left

SEVENTH INNING

- Wingate answered with two runs in the top of the seventh
- Simpson reached on a two-out error
- Guy followed with his first home of the year, a two-run bomb to left to make it 5-1
- A Zach Boze homer in the bottom of the frame pulled the Eagles within three

EIGHTH INNING

- Wingate extended the lead back to four in the top of the eighth
- Christopher lined a two-out single to left, then went to second on a walk
- He scored on McKay's RBI single up the middle to put WU on top 6-2

NINTH INNING

- Mellett gave the 'Dogs a 7-2 lead with his second homer of the day and ninth of the year
- The honorable mention All-SAC honoree has five homers in six games against CN this season
- Dansky followed with a single, then moved to third on a Logan McNeely double
- Bryant's RBI groundout plated Dansky to give the 'Dogs an 8-2 advantage

WRAPUP

- Mitchell got the win, moving to 3-1 on the season
- He allowed just two runs on nine hits in nine innings, striking out two and walking one
- Mitchell threw 101 pitches on the day, 70 for strikes
- Mitchel induced inning-ending double plays in the third, sixth and eighth innings
- First career complete game for Mitchell, who had a previous long outing of seven innings vs. PBA in February of 2020
- Mason Mooney took the loss, falling to 1-3
- He allowed three runs on four hits in six innings, striking out two
- Each of the three Carson-Newman pitchers allowed a homer on Monday
