Bulldogs hold off Cavaliers to earn 11th consecutive win

Wise, Va.-—-The Wingate University Bulldogs were outscored by 10 points in the final 10 minutes, but held on Sunday afternoon, picking up their first victory in the new year in a 636-61 road victory over UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action. Wingate improves to 11-1 on the season and 9-0 in the SAC, while the Cavaliers fall to 3-9 overall and 3-7 in league play.
 
KEY STATS
 
- UVA Wise shot 41 percent from the field; the Bulldogs shot 32 percent on the afternoon
- The 'Dogs were five-for-13 from three-point range (39 percent); Wise was six-of-22 from distance (27 percent)

FIRST QUARTER
 
- UVA Wise opened up the game on a 10-2 run
- Meg Crawford's jumper four minutes in gave the Cavaliers the early lead
- The Bulldogs utilized a 9-2 run in under two minutes to cut the Wise lead to one
- Wingate went on a separate 11-0 run later in the quarter
- Wilson's and-one gave the 'Dogs a 22-14 lead

SECOND QUARTER

- A Mackenzie King layup from UVA Wise cut the Cavalier deficit to three points with 2:51 remaining in the half

- WU opened the second half on an 8-2 run
- The Bulldogs' largest lead of the game came with 3:22 remaining in the third
- Wilson's three-pointer gave the 'Dogs a 49-31 advantage
- The Cavaliers rode a 7-1 run to cut the Wingate lead to 12 points heading into the final 10 minutes
 
FOURTH QUARTER
 
- UVA Wise went on another 7-1 run after the quarter break, cutting the lead Bulldog lead down to six
- After a Caitlyn Ross layup brought Wise within a single point, the Cavaliers began extending the game by fouling with a minute to go
- Troutman's pair of free throws was answered by a Wise jumper to bring the Wingate lead back to 59-58
- Wilson made one free throw, but the Bulldogs forced a turnover and Troutman knocked down a pair of foul shots to extend the lead to four
- Wise's Jaymi Golden knocked down a triple with six seconds left cut the deficit back to one
- Clark connected on her second free throw attempt
- UVA Wise's three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark
