NCAA Regional Semifinal Preview | Wingate vs. Barry

Melbourne, Fla.----The seventh-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs are in Florida this weekend, taking on third-seeded and 23rd-ranked Barry University in the NCAA Super Region 2 semifinals Friday at noon on the campus of Florida Tech. The 'Dogs are 10-4-7 overall, advancing on penalty kicks in each of their first two NCAA Tourney contests. Barry is 11-3-3 overall, coming off a 3-0 victory over Christian Brothers Saturday.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

- Wingate earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament
- The Bulldogs won the outright regular season SAC title
- It was the ninth regular season conference championship for the 'Dogs
- Wingate has 15 total league titles, the most in SAC history
- The seventh-seeded Bulldogs advanced past 10th-seeded Converse in PKs in the opener
- The 'Dogs knocked off second-seeded LR in penalty kicks Monday
- Barry is the number three seed in the regional
- The Bucs took home the regular season Sunshine State Conference title
- Barry fell to Florida Tech in the SSC Tournament title match
- After a round-one bye, the Bucs took down Christian Brothers 3-0 to advance to Friday's semis

- The winner of Friday's game is onto the regional finals
- The region finals are also the NCAA National Quarterfinals
- Only eight teams will remain after Friday's action
- Friday's winner will face the winner of the Florida Tech/Rollins contest for the region title

- The Bulldogs are making their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance
- 10 of the 11 appearances have come since the 2007 season
- Wingate won its first-ever region title in the 2012 season

- WU has only allowed multiple goals once all season, coming in the second game of the year
- The 'Dogs rode a seven-match winning streak in October to the SAC title
- Wingate went on a 10-match unbeaten streak from Oct. 1 through Oct. 29
- Owen Marshall anchors the defense, earning SAC Defensive Player of the Year honors
- He earned first team All-SAC and All-Region accolades
- In addition to his defense, Marshall is second on the team with five goals this season
- Aleksa Janjic earned first team All-SAC and All-Region honors in his first season at Wingate
- He ranks in the top 15 in the nation in goals-against average and save percentage
- Janjic stopped all three PKs to help Wingate advance past the Bears Monday night
- Pedro Santos earned first team All-SAC and second team All-Region accolades
- In addition to his defensive efforts, Santos has contributed two goals and an assist
- Niclas Wittur is also an All-SAC and All-Region honoree
- The defender ranks third on the team with four goals on the year, adding an assist
- Emil Svenander picked up second team All-SAC accolades
- The freshman leads the team with seven goals, adding an assist for a team-best 15 points
- Mattis Westberg, Gui Fontes, Fabio Rodrigues and David Sahakyan have two goals each this year
- Mattia Ditommaso has a goal and three assists on the season

ABOUT THE BUCS

- Barry is 11-3-3 overall, going 6-1-3 in league play
- The Bucs rank 15th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 2.41 goals per game
- Barry has scored two or more goals in 11 of 17 matches this season
- The Bucs have been shutout just twice all season (Lenoir-Rhyne and Lynn)
- David Polanco leads the Barry attack with 10 goals, adding an assist for 21 points
- Daniel Schaal has five goals and sidx assists, whiel Pascal Sattelberger has four goals and six assists
- Juan Simoniello and Iker Berruezo have added four goals and an assist apiece
