Four Bulldogs earn Academic All-District® football recognition

Austin, Texas----Wingate University has four football student-athletes on the Academic All-District® team for Super Region 2, as selected by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) this week. Two Bulldogs are repeat selections: three-time Academic All-District® wide receiver Trevor Grant and two-time quarterback pick Shaw Crocker.
 
Junior offensive lineman Porfirio Acosta and junior wide receiver Trevor Bryan join Crocker and Grant on the Academic All-District® list. The Wingate quartet has helped the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad Bulldogs (10-2 overall) advance to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Wingate faces Benedict College Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina.
 
Porfirio Acosta
Junior offensive lineman (Woodstock, Ga.)
 
- Has played in eight games with four starts
- Has recorded 384 snaps with a 92 percent grade between effort and execution
- Has posted 26 knockdown blocks while allowing only one sack
- Academically, Acosta holds a 3.54 GPA as a finance major
 
Trevor Bryan
Junior wide receiver (Charlotte, N.C.)
 
- Has 10 receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown
- Recorded four catches each in road victories over Shaw and Lenoir-Rhyne
- Snagged a touchdown pass in a road triumph against Tusculum
- In the classroom, Bryan has a 3.85 GPA with his sport management major
 
Shaw Crocker
Graduate student quarterback (Greenville, S.C.)
2019 All-South Atlantic Conference, second team
 
- Entering the second round of the 2022 NCAAs, Crocker has a 39-13 overall record as a starter
- Has 90 career touchdown passes (second on the WU career charts)
- 2022 statistics ledger: 173-of-309 passing for 2164 yards and 22 touchdowns
- Graduated in 2021 with a degree in mathematics and education and a 3.64 GPA
- Holds a perfect 4.00 GPA in Wingate's master of arts in sport management
 
Trevor Grant
Senior wide receiver (Matthews, N.C.)
2022 William V. Campbell Trophy®, semi-finalist
 
- Ended '22 regular season with six catches, 144 yards, 2 TDs in win over UVA Wise
- Has compiled 19 receptions for 308 yards and four touchdowns so far this season
- Posted four catches for 53 yards and the game-winning TD at Limestone
- Academically, Grant holds a 3.96 GPA with an accounting major
 
What's Next
 
Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in December. The CSC Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the release linked in this story.
 
NCAA Division II CSC Academic All-America® programs
 
The Division II CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Divisions II Academic All-America® programs.
 
District III (Super Region 2) includes schools with affiliations to the South Atlantic Conference, the Gulf South Conference and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. To be nominated for Academic All-America® honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or a significant reserve on his team.
