Miscues costly in Wingate’s loss at #6 West Florida in National Quarterfinals

Pensacola, Fla.----The 22nd-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs turned it over six times Saturday afternoon, falling 45-14 against sixth-ranked West Florida in the NCAA Division II football national quarterfinals. The Argonauts improve to 12-1 overall, advancing to the national semifinals. Wingate ends its season at 11-3 overall, setting a program record for wins and playing in the national quarterfinals for the first time in program history.

FIRST QUARTER

- The 'Dogs stopped the Argonauts on the opening drive and took over at their own 10

- An 11-yard connection to Martin and a nine-yard Wilson run got the 'Dogs inside the UWF 40
- Crocker hit Jones for a 38-yard touchdown to put Wingate on top 7-0

SECOND QUARTER

- West Florida outscored Wingate 24-0 in the second quarter
- A Peewee Jarrett 35-yard TD pass to David Durden tied it at seven with 12:19 to go
- The Argos took a 10-7 lead on a Griffin Cerra 32-yard field goal
- Anthony Johnson picked off Crocker with 2:33 to go and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown
- Another UWF interception set the Argonauts up at the Wingate 33
- Jarrett hit Jakobe Quillen from five yards out on the last play of the half to make it 24-7

THIRD QUARTER

- The Argonaut defense struck again when Kelvin Johnson picked up a fumble and returned it 37 yards to make it 30-7
- A Keon Voisin 64-yard pick-six with nine minutes left made it 38-7
- Kode Lowe followed with a 31-yard interception return for a TD on the ensuing drive

FOURTH QUARTER

- Wingate went on a 17-play, 94 yard drive that used up nearly nine minutes in the fourth quarter
- Bell had runs of 11 and 13 yards to get it to the Wingate 30
- A 10-yard Bell run and nine-yard Jalen Kelly run got it inside the UWF 40
- Estranza capped the drive with a 19-yard TD run to make it 45-14
