#24 Wingate holds off Newberry’s fourth-period comeback

Newberry, S.C.----The Newberry College Wolves scored six of the seven goals in the final 15 minutes, but it wasn't enough as the 24th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs held on for the 15-13 road win in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action. The victory marked head coach Abby Wiley's 100th career win as a collegiate head coach. The Bulldogs improve to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the SAC, while the Wolves drop to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in league play.

FIRST PERIOD

- Newberry got out to a 2-0 early lead after eight minutes of action
- Wingate responded with a pair of goals from Knowles
- The Wolves responded with two more scores, taking a 4-2 lead with three and a half minutes to go
- Burke, Pellet and Kamer each scored in a 92-second span as the Bulldogs jumped in front for the first time of the afternoon and led 5-4 at the end of the first period

SECOND PERIOD

- Wingate extended its unanswered goal streak to five at the start of the second period, as Kamer and Scherer made it a 7-4 game
- Newberry fired back with two goals of their own to make it a one-score game
- Watson scored with three minutes to go in the half, as the 'Dogs took an 8-6 lead to the break

THIRD PERIOD

- The Bulldogs exploded out of the gates in the third period, scoring three times in the first five minutes
- Ruiz, Blakely and Knowles were the goal scorers in the run
- Knowles scored from a free position just a minute later, as Wingate jumped out to a 12-6 advantage
- Newberry's lone goal of the period was scored by Chloe Wood at the 8:29 mark
- Ruiz scored back-to-back goals later in the period with the Bulldogs outscoring the Wolves 6-1 in the third frame

FOURTH PERIOD

- Newberry mirrored Wingate's performance in the third period, scoring three times in just over two minutes to cut their deficit to 14-10
- Pellet's goal off a Knowles assist stopped the spurt at the 10:53 mark
- The Wolves fired back for three more unanswered goals, cutting it to as close as 15-13 with just under four minutes to go
- In the final 30 seconds, Biase made two saves and the 'Dogs blocked another shot attempt, securing the road conference victory
