#8 North Georgia rallies past #13 Wingate in NCAA Tourney opener

Columbus, Ga.----The 13th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs won the doubles points Friday afternoon, then won the first set in four of the six singles matches, but eighth-ranked North Georgia rallied back to prevail 4-2 in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Division II women's tennis tournament. The Nighthawks improve to 15-4 overall, while the 'Dogs end their season at 16-8.

DOUBLES

- The nation's fifth-ranked doubles team of Camilla Ciaccia and Suzuka Sambyakugari won 6-3 over the 14th-ranked doubles team
- Elena Gunfaus teamed with Saga Berggren for a 6-3 victory at three doubles
- Wingate took a 1-0 lead into singles play

SINGLES

- Alex Lopez won 6-2, 6-2 at four singles to put WU on top 2-0
- North Georgia got on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at two singles
- Ciaccia won the first set 6-2 at one singles, but UNG rallied to take the final frames 6-2, 6-2 and tie the match
- Flaminia Guidantoni dropped a tiebreaker in the first set at five singles, while a 6-1 set two win gave the Nighthawks a 3-2 advantage
- Gunfaus won 6-2 at three singles, but again UNG rallied for 6-3, 6-2 wins to clinch the match
- Sambyakugari won the first set 6-2, then led 5-2 in the third after dropping set two when the match was clinched
