Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs are one month away from getting the 2022 football season started. The 11-game slate will feature five home games and six road games. The 'Dogs are coming off an 8-3 season, going 6-2 in SAC play. All home games this season and every SAC contest will be streamed through FloSports. The SAC announced a partnership with FloSports over the summer. Fans can
sign up for a monthly or annual subscription to watch the Bulldogs this season.
The Bulldogs start the season with three consecutive road games. Wingate opens the year Saturday, Sept. 3 at Shaw at 4 p.m. This will be the second straight season the 'Dogs have opened up against Shaw, after rolling to a 30-7 home win to begin the 2021 campaign. Wingate is 3-0 all-time against the Bears, with a 1-0 record at Shaw. The first meeting between the two teams was in 2015, the only time they have met at Shaw, with Wingate prevailing 30-16.
Wingate is back on the road the following Saturday, traveling to Fayetteville State for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 10. The Bulldogs and Broncos have met seven times, with the 'Dogs holding a perfect 7-0 record, which includes a 40-21 victory at Irwin Belk Stadium last year. With the exception of the COVID-shortened 2021 spring season, Wingate and Fayetteville State have met each of the last four seasons. The 'Dogs prevailed 34-24 the last time the two teams met in Fayetteville in the 2019 season. Wingate is 3-0 all-time at Fayetteville State.
The 'Dogs wrap up the three-game road trip by opening SAC play at Tusculum on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs are 16-9 all-time against the Pioneers, winning three straight in the series and four of the last five, including a thrilling 43-35 homecoming victory in 2021, capped by a
Justin Armwood 94-yard pick-six on the final play of the game. Wingate prevailed 28-21 in 2019, the last time the two teams met in Greenville.
Wingate's first home game is set for Saturday, Sept. 24, hosting Emory & Henry at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs will be celebrating Family Weekend on the 24th, which will also be Student-Athlete Appreciation Day. Emory & Henry is new to the SAC and Division II. The Wasps went 6-4 in the 2021 season. This will be Emory & Henry's first-ever SAC road game. The Wasps are set to host Newberry Sept. 17 in their first-ever SAC contest.
The Bulldogs are back on the road the following weekend, traveling to Erskine for a 4 p.m. kickoff. This will be another first-time matchup for the Bulldogs. Erskine's program began in the shortened 2021 spring season, a six-game slate. The 2021 season saw the Flying Fleet go 3-8 overall, including losses to SAC foes Catawba, Barton and Newberry.
Wingate is back at Irwin Belk Stadium Saturday, Oct. 8, hosting Catawba at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs are 17-17 all-time against the Indians, with a 9-9 record at home. Wingate has won five straight in the series and 10 of the last 11, which includes a forfeit victory last year. The 'Dogs rolled to a 33-6 home victory in the 2021 spring season, the last time they met at Irwin Belk Stadium.
The Bulldogs hit the road Oct. 15, traveling to Limestone for a noon kickoff. Wingate is a perfect 7-0 against the Saints, with a 3-0 record in Gaffney. The 'Dogs prevailed 35-17 at Limestone last season, with
Shaw Crocker throwing for 261 yards and three touchdowns, with two of those TD tosses going to
Kamal Desor. The 'Dogs added 204 rushing yards on the day. Wingate has outscored Limestone 262-114 in the seven games in the series.
The Bulldogs return home Saturday, Oct. 22, hosting Barton at 6 p.m. on Homecoming and Hall of Fame Weekend. The two teams have met twice, with each team winning once. This will be the first-ever meeting at Wingate. The first meeting between the two teams was in the 2021 spring season, with the 'Dogs rolling to a 55-14 victory in Wilson. Barton responded with a 26-20 overtime home victory last fall.
Wingate is back on the road Saturday, Oct. 29, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The 'Dogs are 13-24 against the Bears, with a 6-12 record in Hickory. LR has won five straight in the series, including a 20-13 victory in 2019, the last time the two teams met in Hickory.
The 'Dogs return home Saturday, Nov. 5, hosting Newberry at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. The Bulldogs are 16-16 all-time against the Wolves, with a 9-6 home record. Newberry has won two straight in the series, prevailing 41-35 in overtime at Newberry last season. The Wolves also won 34-15 in Newberry in the 2021 spring season. Wingate won the previous three meetings from 2017 through 2019, including a 35-28 home victory in 2019, the last time the teams met at Irwin Belk Stadium.
The Bulldogs will have another home game on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1:30 p.m. If Wingate wins the division, the 'Dogs will host the SAC championship game. If the Bulldogs are not the division champs, they are set to host UVA Wise.
