Wingate Swimming’s 2022-23 schedule features first-ever SAC meet, training trip return

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams open their 2022-23 season on Friday, October 7, venturing to Charlotte to face Queens University of Charlotte in a dual meet. The Bulldog teams will swim 12 events each this season, culminating with the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships in March.
 
The Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad Bulldog teams have joined the South Atlantic Conference for the 2022-23 season, as men's and women's swimming are now official league sports. Wingate will serve as host for the first-ever SAC Swimming Championships Feb. 8-11 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte.
 
Fall semester schedule highlights
 
- After the Queens dual meet, Wingate will travel to the Buckeye State for the Ohio University Invitational Oct. 14-15
- The Ohio U. head coach is Wingate Sports Hall of Fame swimmer Mason Norman ('10)
- In addition to the NCAA Division I OU Bobcats, the Bulldogs will face Bellarmine (D1) and Findlay (D2)
- Next is a two-day triangular meet with Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne
- The three men's teams swim at Catawba on Oct. 21; the women compete at Wingate Oct. 22
- Wingate concludes the fall semester with three invitational meets (Emory, Queens and SCAD)
- The Emory Fall Invitational is Nov. 4-5, while the Queens Fall Frenzy is Nov. 18-20
- The SCAD-Savannah Invite is Dec. 1-3 at the Chatman County Aquatic Center
- The Bulldog women have won 11 SCAD-Savannah Invitational titles, while the men have claimed 10 crowns
 
Spring semester schedule highlights
 
- The Bulldogs rejoice with the return of the team's Florida training trip in early January
- Wingate concludes its time in Florida with a dual meet at Rollins Jan. 14
- The Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Day Jan. 21 when Lees-McRae visits for a two-session dual meet
- The first session on Saturday, Jan. 21 begins at 10 a.m., while session two starts at 3 p.m.
- Wingate's final regular season dual meet is Jan. 28 versus Barton in Rocky Mount
- The first-ever SAC swimming championship meet follows on Feb. 8-11
- Wingate will return to Atlanta for the Emory Last Chance Invitational on Feb. 18
- The NCAA championships are March 8-11 in Indianapolis (IU Natatorium at IUPUI)

- Wingate has 45 NCAA national championship swims lifetime (31 women, 14 men)
- At NCAAs, the WU women have earned second place once (2016) and third twice
- The 'Dogs have earned fifth place at NCAA men's meet once with five sixth-place showings
- WUSWIM student-athletes have earned Academic All-America® at-large team honors 35 times (19 men, 16 women)
- A program-best 37 WUSWIM student-athletes were named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans in 2022
- Wingate earned 11 Bluegrass Mountain Conference titles (seven men's, four women's) while BMC members
Kirk Sanocki enters his 22nd year at WU this fall (22 years with women's team, 18 years with men's squad)
- Sanocki collected 11 BMC Coach of the Year trophies (six men, five women)
- Sanocki has been named NCAA D2 national COTY twice (women 2016, men 2012)
- The Bulldogs join the South Atlantic Conference this fall as the league will sponsor swimming for the first time
 
Wingate University
 
Founded in 1896, Wingate University is a laboratory of difference-making that serves more than 3,400 students in North Carolina. Wingate offers 38 undergraduate majors as well as seven master's and four doctoral degrees.
