Wingate downs Shaw 21-7 for 10th straight season-opening victory

Box Score Durham, N.C.----For the 10th consecutive season, the Wingate University Bulldogs have opened the season with a victory. The Wingate defense was stifling all afternoon in the 21-7 victory over Shaw, as the 'Dogs move to 1-0 overall and the SU Bears fall to 0-1.

Shaw Crocker started things off by running in a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Bears scored the equalizer late in the first quarter to tie it. Neither team scored in the second, sending the game to halftime at 7-7.

After a scoreless third quarter, the 'Dogs struck on the opening play of the fourth quarter when Crocker hit Myles Dillon for a 55-yard touchdown.

Daniel Morrison recovered a fumble deep in Shaw territory to set the 'Dogs up for another score. Tremel Jones scored his first career touchdown three plays into the drive to make it 21-7.

Wingate is on the road for two more weeks, traveling to Fayetteville State next Saturday before opening league play at Tusculum on Sept. 17. The Bulldogs come home on Sept. 24 to host Emory & Henry at 6 p.m. on Family Weekend.
