Catawba uses big third quarter to take down Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs were outscored 21-10 in the third quarter, which was the difference in their 73-68 loss in Cuddy Arena against Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night. Catawba improves to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs drop to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in league play.
 
KEY STATS
 
- Each team made 46 percent of its shot attempts
- Wingate was seven-of-17 (41 percent) from three-point range, while Catawba was five-for-19 (26 percent) from deep
- Catawba made 12 of 19 (63 percent) from the free throw line; the Bulldogs made nine of their 15 attempts (60 percent)
- CC out-rebounded WU 42-30 and won the second-chance battle 13-1
- The 'Dogs had 18 assists to 16 turnovers; Catawba had 14 assists to 16 turnovers

- Bryanna Troutman posted a season-high 20 points on eight-of-13 shooting and 10 rebounds
- Hannah Clark recorded 13 points and three assists
- Lauren Sullivan had 13 points and nine rebounds with three three-pointers
- Leah Barringer added five points and three assists
- Adair Garrison also had five points on two shot attempts
 
FIRST QUARTER
 
- The two sides went back and forth in the early going, as Troutman's jumper took a 5-4 lead with two minutes in
- Jaia Wilson's jumper at the 3:42 mark gave the 'Dogs a four-point cushion
- Catawba rattled off a 9-0 run to take a 19-14 lead with under a minute to go
- Clark's three cut the Wingate deficit to two points at the quarter break
 
SECOND QUARTER
 
- The 'Dogs took the lead in the opening 32 seconds with back-to-back buckets
- Both sides battled back and forth until Mercedes Wampler's three pushed Catawba ahead 26-23
- The lead on either side didn't get above two for the remainder of the half
- Barringer's layup took the lead 35-33 at halftime
 
THIRD QUARTER
 
- The 'Dogs scored back-to-back buckets to take a 39-33 lead at the 7:59 mark
- Catawba answered with two straight scores of their own, cutting the deficit to two nearly two minutes later
- Catawba's 12-0 run propelled them to a 53-45 lead with two minutes left in the quarter
- The Catawba Indians took a 54-47 lead into the final 10 minutes
 
FOURTH QUARTER
 
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Troutman and Sullivan cut an eight-point deficit to two points at the 4:21 mark
- Catawba answered with five straight points to take a seven-point lead with 1:07 left
- Sullivan's three-pointer cut the WU deficit to a single possession with 45 seconds left
- The Bulldogs never got within three points, however, as Catawba knocked down free throws down the stretch to hold on 73-68
