Charlotte, N.C.----The No. 14 Wingate University women's cross country team finished second in the 29-team Royals Cross Country Challenge Gold Division Friday, defeating 10 NCAA Division I teams in the process. Bulldog junior
Laila Abouzaid led the defending South Atlantic Conference and Southeast Region champions, posting a 5K time of 18:15.84. Queens University of Charlotte hosted the Royals Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park.
Wingate notched 99 points to claim honors as the top NCAA Division II school in the field. NAIA powerhouse Milligan (Tenn.) won the Gold Division with 77 points. Wingate defeated Division I schools from the College of Charleston, Furman, Charlotte, Wake Forest, Davidson, Winthrop, Campbell, South Carolina, Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State.
