Farris strikes out 18 to lead Wingate to 5-1 victory over Lincoln Memorial

Wingate, N.C.---- Wingate University All-American left-hander Mitch Farris set a career-high and nearly broke the SAC record with 18 strikeouts in his start on Friday night, propelling the Wingate University Bulldogs to a 5-1 win over the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium. With the win, Wingate improves to 14-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while LMU falls to 12-5 and 1-3 in SAC play.

- The 'Dogs held four of the five extra-base hits with two doubles and two homers compared to LMU's lone double

KEY BULLDOGS
 
- Farris earned the winning decision, striking out 18 batters over eight innings, allowing one run, three hits, and walking two
- Seaver King led the offense, going three-for-four with a double and a homer, scoring two runs and driving in one
- Ricky Clark had two doubles, two RBI and a run scored
- Brett Adams hit a solo home run late in the game
- Corey Avant came out of the bullpen for the final inning, allowing one hit and striking out three
 
THIRD INNING
 
- The 'Dogs opened the scoring in the third frame
- Lane Rhodes started it with a single, then went to third on King's double
- Clark drove home both with a two-run double to right

FOURTH INNING

- After a walk to Carson Boles, Gavin Whitehurst singled him in to reduce the deficit to 2-1

SIXTH INNING

- Clark led off the frame with another double
- Later in the frame, Andrew McKay legged out an infield single with two outs to score Clark and put WU up 3-1

EIGHTH INNING

- King launched a solo homer over the scoreboard to lead off the inning
- Adams followed it up with a solo homer of his own two batters later to right center, putting Wingate up by the winning score of 5-1

WRAPUP

- Farris took the win, moving to 6-0 on the year
- He went eight innings in the game, allowing one earned run, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out eighteen
- Farris struck out multiple batters in each of the first seven frames, striking out the final batter of the night in the eighth
- He leads the SAC with his six wins, 67 strikeouts and a 1.41 ERA in 38 1/3 innings
- Farris has struck out at least nine in all six starts, hitting double figures five times
- He has gone at least five innings in every start, allowing fewer than five hits in five of those
- Patrick Queener took the loss, allowing three earned runs over six innings with eight strikeouts
