Bulldogs drop two against Wasps Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Ron Christopher Stadium against the Emory & Henry College Wasps in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. E&H took the first game by a final score of 7-4, then prevailed 8-6 in game two. The losses take Wingate down to 12-6 overall and 3-3 in the SAC, while Emory & Henry improves to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in league play.

KEY STATS
 
- Wingate out-hit Emory & Henry 7-6 in the contest
- The 'Dogs had two of the three extra-base hits with two doubles compared to the Wasps home run
- E&H left five on base while the Bulldogs stranded one
- Wingate committed all three errors in the contest
- Emory & Henry had the only two stolen bases in the game
- The 'Dogs pitching staff struck out nine with zero walks; The Wasps struck out seven Wingate hitters and walked four
 
KEY BULLDOGS
 
- Mitch Farris went 3-4 in the game at the plate with a pair of doubles, driving in a pair of runs
- Carson Simpson collected two hits in three at-bats and drove in a run
- Seaver King scored a run and drove in two with a double in his one-for-four day at the plate
- Austin Mitchell went seven innings as the starting pitcher, conceding five hits, four earned runs and no walks while striking out five
- Jordan Howard came out of the bullpen for the final two innings, allowing one hit and an unearned run with no walks and four strikeouts
 
FIRST INNING
 
- The Wasps opened the scoring in the first frame with Wayne Mize scoring Jared Foley on a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0
 
THIRD INNING
- After two singles to start the inning from Mason Lyda and Noah Mazza, Tyler Bradley cleared the bases with a three-run homer to put Emory & Henry up 4-0
 
EIGHTH INNING
- The Wasps kept up the pressure, scoring a run on a Bulldog throwing error to lead 5-0
- In the next at-bat, Tyler Bradley drove in two more to pad a 7-0 E&H advantage
- WU got on the board in the bottom half of the frame when King drove in Simpson and Andrew Motsinger with a two-run double
- Farris added two more in the inning with a two-run single to bring home King and Michael Dansky

WRAPUP

- Mitchell took the loss, his first of the season as he now is 2-1 this year
- He went seven innings in the game, allowing six runs with only four earned, giving up five hits and striking out five
- Bryson Wagner earned the winning decision over seven innings, conceding two earned runs
- Mason Lyda notched a save over the final 1 and 1/3 innings with one strikeout

- Ricky Clark led the way offensively with a three-for-four game, scoring two runs
- Isaiah Williams-Rhem had a homer and walked in his start, driving in a pair of runs
- Brett Adams added a homer, going two-for-four with an RBI and run scored
- Simpson cleared the bases with a three-run double in his lone hit of the game
- Josh Dotson earned the start, going three innings and allowing four earned runs, striking out two

FIRST INNING

- Adams got the scoring started with a soaring solo home run to right field
- Just four batters later Simpson brought home three runs on a double, scoring Williams-Rhem, Clark, and Farris to give WU an early 4-0 lead
 
SECOND INNING

- Matt Hill got the Wasps on the board, doubling home Matthew Long to cut the Bulldogs lead to 4-1
 
THIRD INNING

- Tyler Bradley blasted his second of three homers of the day, tying the game at four with a two-run shot
- Williams-Rhem responded for Wingate with a two-run homer of his own, putting the 'Dogs back on top 6-4
 
FIFTH INNING

- Bradley and Mize scored the tying runs off of a Cole Cunningham double, knotting the score up at six apiece
 
SEVENTH INNING

- Bradley finished off his big day with the de-facto game-winning home run, putting the Wasps on top for good with an 8-6 margin
 
WRAPUP

- Sam Broderson took the loss in relief, dropping his record to 1-2
- The right-hander allowed two earned runs in one inning of work, adding one strikeout
- Zach Clover notched a win in relief for Emory & Henry, going two innings with no hits and no earned runs
- Lyda finished his second save of the day, striking out one and giving up one hit in the final inning. 

UP NEXT

- Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Mount Olive for a 4 p.m. start
- The Bulldogs host Concord Wednesday at 3 p.m.
