Farris tosses two-hit shutout as #21 Wingate downs Anderson in SAC Tourney opener

Wingate, N.C.----SAC Pitcher of the Year Mitch Farris tossed his third complete game of the season and second shutout of the year, tossing his fourth career complete-game shutout to lead the second-seeded Wingate University Bulldogs to a 2-0 victory over seventh-seeded Anderson University on day one of the South Atlantic Conference tournament at Ron Christopher Stadium Friday evening. Wingate improves to 31-16 overall, advancing to the winner's bracket to face LMU Saturday at 11 a.m. Anderson falls to 24-26 and will face Catawba in an elimination game Saturday afternoon.

- The Bulldogs had three of the four extra-base hits with three doubles compared to AU's one double
- WU left nine on base while Anderson stranded three
- Farris struck out nine with one walk; the Trojans struck out five and walked three

- Farris tossed a complete game shutout in a winning decision, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out nine
- Carson Simpson went two-for-three at the plate with a double
- Seaver King scored both WU runs in a one-for-four effort with a double
- Brett Adams drove in a run on a double and also drew a walk
- Ricky Clark went one-for-two with an RBI and a walk

FIRST INNING

- King opened up the WU first inning with a double to left center field
- After the second of two straight flyouts, King tagged up and advanced to third
- Sean Barnett walked to put Bulldogs at the corners with two outs
- Clark smacked a ground ball past the Anderson first baseman to score King and put Wingate up 1-0

FIFTH INNING

- Lane Rhodes started the frame with a single to right field, but was put out on the base paths on King's fielders' choice
- Two batters later, Adams went the other way with a double down the left field line and scored King all the way from first to double the 'Dogs lead to 2-0.

WRAPUP

- Farris recorded the win, moving to 11-1 on the year while striking out nine and walking one
- He allowed just two hits, a one-out double in the third and leadoff single in the seventh
- Farris retired the first seven of the game, then retired 11 straight at another point
- He retired the final nine batters of the night, throwing 102 pitches
- Farris lowers his season ERA to 1.21
- He has now tossed complete game shutouts in all three career postseason starts
- Trey Princiotto took the losing decision, working 7 2/3 innings while allowing eight hits, two earned runs, striking out four and walking three
