Eagles hold off Bulldogs 70-59 Saturday afternoon

Wingate, N.C.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles outscored Wingate University 54-39 over the final three quarters Saturday afternoon, prevailing 70-59 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Eagles improve to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in league play.

- Carson-Newman shot 35 percent from the field, going nine-for-31 from three-point range (29 percent)
- Wingate shot 29 percent from the field, connecting on five-of-16 from deep (31 percent)

- Hege's layup put the 'Dogs on top at the 2:41 mark
- Layups from Clark and Breedlove in the final minute gave WU a 20-16 advantage

SECOND QUARTER

- A Breedlove triple put the Bulldogs on top by five in the opening minute
- C-N scored the next 11, taking a 29-23 lead at the 6:38 mark
- An Anderson layup and Clark three tied it at 31 with 1:44 to go
- A Kali McMahan three gave the Eagles a 37-34 halftime lead

THIRD QUARTER

- A Tori Rutherford triple two minutes in gave C-N a 44-37 lead
- Buckets from Clark and Wilson cut the lead to one with 5:42 to go
- A Skylar Boshears jumper gave the Eagles a 49-45 advantage
- Two Hege free throws cut the lead to two at the 3:44 mark
- The Eagles scored the next seven, taking a 56-47 lead on a Rutherford layup with 2:22 to go
- Clark's layup in the final seconds cut the lead to six heading to the final frame

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Braelyn Wykle three gave Carson-Newman a 62-50 lead two minutes in
- A Hege jumper and Wilson free throw pulled the 'Dogs back within seven
- Four Wykle free throws put the Eagles on top 66-55 with 1:07 remaining
- Wingate got no closer than nine the rest of the way
