Bulldogs pick up huge 14-10 victory at #12 Lenoir-Rhyne

Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs picked up another huge conference road victory Saturday afternoon, prevailing 14-10 at Lenoir-Rhyne University in South Atlantic Conference football action. Wingate wins its fifth straight, improving to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Bears fall to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in league play. The 'Dogs have won three straight in the series with LR, winning their second straight game in Hickory. It is the second victory over a top-20 opponent this year, adding it to the 21-7 win over #17 Delta State. 

KEY STATS

- Wingate had 248 passing yards and 55 rushing yards for 303 total yards
- LR had 119 passing yards and 56 rushing yards for 175 yards of offense
- Season lows for rushing, passing and total yards for the Bears
- Also a season-low 10 points for Lenoir-Rhyne
- Fifth time this season the Bulldogs have held an opponent to their season low in points

- Evan McCray had career highs of 10 catches and 140 yards, scoring a touchdown
- McCray has 14 receptions for 237 yards and two TDs in two games against the Bears
- O'Brien Barnett had 15 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown
- Matt Flanders had two grabs for 27 yards
- Carlos Estronza and Trevor Bryan each added 26 receiving yards
- Marquise Fleming had six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, with two QB hurries

FIRST QUARTER

- A Teeter punt put LR inside its own 10 early in the quarter
- Wingate got a three-and out and took over at the 40
- The 'Dogs worked it to the LR 20, but the field goal attempt was block, keeping it scoreless

SECOND QUARTER

- A 41-yard Teeter punt went out of bounds at the LR four yard line
- The Bears went backwards three yards in three plays, forced to punt out of their endzone
- The 'Dogs took over at the LR 30 after a 29-yard punt
- Barnett broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run on the first play to give WU a 7-0 lead
- Wingate put together a 10-play, 55-yard drive to get inside the LR 25
- McCray had catches of 22 and 17 yards on the drive
- The 'Dogs were unable to connect on a 41-yard field goal, keeping the score 7-0
- Perry intercepted LR quarterback Jalen Ferguson on the next drive
- The pick set Wingate up at the Lenoir-Rhyne 33
- A 10-yard pass to Estronza got the 'Dogs to the 21
- Bentley hit McCray on the next play for a 21-yard TD, giving Wingate a 14-0 halftime lead

THIRD QUARTER

- LR went 75 yards on seven plays to open up the second half
- Ferguson's 22-yard touchdown run made it 14-7 with 12:18 to go
- Jake Brown connected on a 27-yard field goal at the 4:53 mark to make it a 14-10 game

FOURTH QUARTER

- A 20-yard McCray catch and 13-yard Flanders reception got WU to the LR 29
- The Bulldogs would turn it over on downs at the Lenoir-Rhyne 22 with 11 minutes left
- A five-yard tackle for loss from White highlighted the ensuing three-and-out for LR
- Bentley was intercepted at the LR 11 with 4:24 remaining
- Bryan Bordeaux started the Lenoir-Rhyne series with a six-yard TFL
- The Bears were forced to punt from their own 12
- The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize, punting it back to the Bears with 1:48 to go
- Lenoir-Rhyne took over at its own 22, trailing by four
- Ferguson threw four straight incompletions to end the game
- Morrison got pressure on two of the four players, with Jonathen Cross adding a break-up
