Fleming repeats as Region Defensive Player of the Year; five Bulldogs earn D2CCA All-Region honors

D2CCA All-Super Region 2 Teams

Valdosta, Ga.----
For the second consecutive year, Wingate University defensive end Marquise Fleming has been named the Super Region 2 Defensive Player of the Year by the D2CCA. Fleming is joined on the All-Region first team by linebacker Dontorian Best and offensive lineman Erwil Anthony. Defensive lineman Daniel Morrison is a second team All-Region selection, along with kicker Caleb Bonesteel.

Fleming continues to pile up the accolades. The two-time SAC Defensive Player of the Year is now the two-time Region Defensive Player of the Year. The senior was a consensus first team All-American in 2023 when he led the nation in sacks. This season, Fleming is the nation's leader in tackles for loss. Fleming has piled up 58 tackles on the year, with 19.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks. He also has 14 QB hurries and a pair of forced fumbles. He has been the anchor in a WU defense that leads the nation in third down defense and red zone defense, ranking third in total defense, sixth in scoring defense and tackles for loss and seventh in pass defense.

Anthony has also been hauling in major hardware this year. The first team All-SAC honoree adds this All-Region nod to the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, which goes to the top offensive lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. Anthony helped pave the way for All-SAC running back O'Brien Barnett and All-SAC QB Brooks Bentley, starting every game at right tackle for the SAC champs.

Best was also a huge part of one of the nation's top defensive units. The linebacker led the Bulldogs with 79 tackles, including seven tackles for loss, while adding an interception, three pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and three QB hurries. Best piled up 13 tackles in the Delta State win with 2.5 TFLs, while notching 10 tackles against Catawba and nine against Virginia Union, including 1.5 TFLs while adding two QB hurries. He had five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery against Catawba.

Morrison was another force on the vaunted Wingate defensive line. He piled up 46 tackles on the season with 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He also collected a pair of pass break-ups and nine QB hurries, adding a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Morrison had 2.5 TFLs and a sack in the Delta State win, while notching 1.5 sacks at Carson-Newman. He had seven tackles and a sack in the SAC title game win over Carson-Newman.

Bonesteel adds All-Region accolades to his All-SAC Piedmont Division honor and SAC championship game MVP accolades. Bonesteel made 17 field goals on the season, and made 33 of his 34 PATs, leading the Bulldogs with 84 points. He made 11 field goals of 30 yards or more, including four of at least 40 yards. Bonesteel made his last nine field goals of the year, including going five-for-five in the title game with a 43, 48 and 38-yarder. HE made another 48-yarder in the play-off game, while also connecting from 39 yards in the contest.
