#8 Wingate takes down #6 Newberry 11-9 in top-10 SAC showdown

Newberry, S.C.----The eighth-ranked Wingate University knocked off their third ranked team of the season Wednesday night and their second victory over a top-10 team with an 11-9 victory at #6 Newberry in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action. Wingate moves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

FIRST PERIOD

- Curtis Bukta put the Wolves back on top with a goal with 2:55 remaining
- Riley scored off Greico's assist a minute later to tie it at two
- Samson scored off a Riley assist with 26 seconds left to give Wingate a 3-2 lead

SECOND PERIOD

- Moran's goal 33 seconds in put the 'Dogs on top by two
- Newberry struck twice in a two-minute span, tying it at four on Bukta's goal at the 11:25 mark
- The Bulldogs scored the final three goals of the half
- Papach's goal off a Clark assisted started the flurry at the 7:22 mark, giving WU a 5-4 lead
- Grieco scored at the 4:38 mark to push the lead to two
- Moran scored a minute later off a Clark assist, making it 7-4

THIRD PERIOD

- Spence scored Wingate's fourth straight goal two minutes into the half off a Riley assist
- Grieco's goal with 10:26 remaining capped the 5-0 run, putting the 'Dogs on top 9-4
- Newberry scored the next three, cutting the lead to two on a Zach Thompson goal with 1:34 left

FOURTH PERIOD

- Riley scored off Papach's assist three minutes into the final frame to make it 10-7
- Papach scored 50 seconds later to put the Bulldogs on top by four
- Miles Jones cut the lead back to three with a goal at the 4:13 mark
- Shane Halliwell's goal with 2:33 remaining made it 11-9
- Newberry won the ensuing faceoff, but Trenty Connolly forced a turnover to give it back to Wingate
- Wingate turned it over, but Salamone forced a turnover with 1:15 remaining
- The Bulldogs were able to run out the rest of the clock to secure the top-10 road win
