Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Athletic Department has announced the nominees for the 12th annual WUSPYS. The 2024 WUSPYS will take place Monday, April 29 at Austin Auditorium. The Blue Carpet show will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Cuddy Arena, with the WUSPYS getting underway at 6:30 p.m. A post-WUSPYS reception with snacks will take place immediately following the show in Cuddy Arena. Below are all of the nominees for each of the categories along with their accomplishments.
A ballot has been sent out to over 100 voters, consisting of members of Wingate's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Wingate coaches and Wingate administration, along with members of the Sports Medicine Team and the Sports Performance Team. Voting will run through the week. All the winners will be announced during Monday's show. The full 2024 WUSPYS will air the day after the WUSPYS. For more information go to

Male Breakthrough Athlete
Dontorian Best, Football
- After collecting 32 tackles in 2022, Best ranked second on the team in tackles this year
- He piled up 61 tackles on the year, with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks
- Earned All-SAC Piedmont Division honors, helping WU rank sixth in the nation in scoring defense
- Had at least six tackles in six of 11 games, with 10 tackles against Limestone and nine against LR
Cam Harris, Baseball
- After hitting .172 last year (5-for-29), Harris is among the league's top hitters this season
- The sophomore is hitting .402 on the year with a team-best 70 hits
- Harris ranks fourth in the SAC in hits, sixth in average and 11th in total bases
- Leads the team with 23 multi-hit games
Titouan Le Grix, Cross Country
- After finishing 24th at the 2022 regionals, Le Grix took home the title at the 2023 regionals
- He did not run at the 2022 NCAA Championships, then finished 29th in 2023
- The All-American helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2023 national championships
- Finished 69th at the Paul Short Run with over 400 runners consisting of 34 Division I teams
Corbin Pack, Basketball
- After appearing in two games last season without a point, Pack had 222 points in 30 games this year
- Pack finished second on the team with 50 threes, shooting 37 percent from deep
- Scored in double figures nine times on the season
- Had 20 points at Emory & Henry, then scored 29 vs. Coker, going 13-18 from deep in the two games
Female Breakthrough Athlete
Nina Azirovic, Swimming
- After not scoring points at the 2023 NCAA's, Azirovic was a huge factor in 2024
- Earned four All-American swims, with a top-eight finish in the 200 Free
- Her time in the 200 Free ranks fourth in WU history
- She also had three wins at the SAC Championships, with five top-three finishes
Claire Fuchs, Lacrosse
- Fuchs more than doubled her point total in 2024 and triple her draw controls for the 'Dogs
- Has 22 goals, 28 assists and 64 draw controls this year after 13 goals, 10 assists and 18 DCs last year
- Earned first team All-SAC honors for her efforts, first all-conference accolade of her career
- Ranks second on the SAC champion Bulldogs in draw controls, assists and points
Lauren Sutcliffe, Women's Golf
- After playing in one tourney last season, Sutcliffe has played in 10 of 11 events this year
- Has posted a 76.3 adjusted scoring average for #17 Wingate this season
- Has five top-25 finishes, finishing 14th to help lead WU to the team title at the Lander Invitational
- Fired a Wingate record-tying three-under par 68 in the final round of the SAC Championships
Tamar Veltman, Triathlon
- After finishing 22nd at Nationals in 2022, Veltman made a big jump in 2023
- She finished fifth at Nationals, helping the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish
- Veltman earned second team All-Region honors, finishing 10th at the East Regional
- She was also named to the 2023 All Scholar-Team
Male Newcomer of the Year
Ricardo Barbosa, Cross Country / Track & Field
- Barbosa finished 24th at the NCAA National Championships to earn All-American honors
- He helped lead the Bulldogs to the National Championships
- Finished seventh at the Paul Short Run with 34 Division I teams and 400 athletes
- Earned 2nd Team All-American honors with his 12th-place finish in the 3,000 Meters at NCAA Indoors
Harry Bircumshaw, Soccer
- Bircumshaw hauled in the awards in his first year at Wingate, helping the 'Dogs win the SAC title
- Earned 2nd Team All-SAC honors and 2nd Team All-Region accolades from D2CCA and United Coaches
- 3rd team Academic All-America honoree named 2nd Team Scholar All-American from Untied Coaches
- Had a goal and three assists in the midfield and helped the WU defense rank among the nation's best
Jordan Hyland, Golf
- Hyland earned 2nd Team All-SAC honors in his first season with the Bulldogs
- Ranks second on the team with a 71.9 adjusted stroke average in nine tournaments this year
- Six straight top-25 finishes including three top-10 showings and a pair of top fives
- Finished fifth at the Hargett Memorial and was the runner-up at the Tennessee River Rumble
Breon Ishmael, Baseball
- Ishmael has been a key factor in the middle of the Bulldog lineup in his first season at Wingate
- He is hitting .331 on the year, with 12 doubles, five homers, 23 RBI and 28 runs scored
- Leads the Bulldogs with 10 stolen bases, ranking third in doubles and fifth in average
- Has piled up 14 multi-hit games on the season
Andres Martijena, Swimming
- Martijena earned multiple SAC titles and All-American honors in his first season at Wingate
- Helped lead the 200 and 400 Medley Relay teams to SAC championships
- Earned 1st Team All-American honors with his 4th-place finish in the 100 Breaststroke
- Honorable Mention All-American honors with a 13th-place showing in the 400 Medley Relay
Thomas Sullivan, Lacrosse
- Sullivan earned 2nd Team All-SAC honors during his first season with the Bulldogs
- Ranks fifth in the nation in goals-against average (8.15) and save percentage (.585)
- Anchors a Wingate defense that ranks fifth in the nation in scoring defense
- Six games with double-digit saves; 18 saves against Fla. Southern and 17 against #6 Mercyhurst
Kendall Taylor, Basketball
- Taylor earned 3rd Team All-SAC honors in his first season with the SAC champion Bulldogs
- Ranked third on the team with 15.8 points per game and second with 6.5 rebounds per game
- Shot 52 percent from the field and 82 percent at the free throw line, ranking second with 85 assists

Manu Baptista Felipe, Soccer
- Earned All-SAC and All-Region accolades during her first season with the Bulldogs
- 2nd Team All-SAC selection started all 20 games for 14-4-2 'Dogs
- Played a key role in the Wu defense that ranked in the top 20 nationally in goals-against and shutouts
- Baptista Felipe helped the 'Dogs wrap up the regular season with seven straight shutouts
Fedra Florentin, Track & Field
- School record holder in the shot put
- Finished fourth at SAC Indoor in Shot Put, currently ranked first in outdoor standings
- Currently number one in the SAC in discus
- Also ranks 10th in the conference in the javelin
Amber Rowoldt, Volleyball
- Rowoldt earned All-SAC, All-Region and honorable mention All-American honors in her first WU season
- Ranked second on the team with 2.39 kills and 3.03 digs per set
- Led the team with 46 aces, ranking third in blocks and blocks per set
- Had 11 double-digit kill efforts while notching seven doubles-doubles on the season
Eva Siska, Tennis
- SAC Player of the Year earned 1st Team All-SAC singles and doubles honors
- Nation's 36th-ranked singles player is 17-1 at #1 singles, going 11-0 in league play
- 16-3 record at #1 doubles, going 12-0 in league play
- Helped lead regular season champs to a 19-2 overall record, going 12-0 in the SAC

- Wingate trailed 34-30 against #7 Lenoir-Rhyne with under a minute to go
- Bentley threw it deep down the left sideline and found McCray
- He made the catch and took off to the end zone to give Wingate the big home win
Pedro Santos 90th-minute game-winner clinches SAC title
- The Bulldogs were in a 1-1 tie in the final minute at Anderson
- Pedro Santos headed home a Harry Bircumshaw corner kick to give the 'Dogs the lead
- The victory clinched Wingate's second straight regular season SAC title.
Caroline Peters deep strike at Emory & Henry
- Wingate and Emory & Henry were in a scoreless tie in the 26th minute when Peters lined up a free kick
- From nearly 30 yards out, Peters ripped a shot into the upper-90 to get the 'Dogs on the board
- The win was the second straight in what ended up being a seven-game streak to cap the regular season
Josh Massey game-winner at Anderson
- Wingate trailed 75-74 at Anderson with the ball at halfcourt with two seconds left
- Donell Nixon took the inbounds pass and found Massey on the left wing
- He sank a 20-footer as time expired, giving the Bulldogs the one-point win to move to 8-0 in the SAC
Men's Cross Country finishes 1-7 at XC Regionals
- The 'Dogs showed their dominance in emphatic fashion, led by region champion Titouan Le Grix
- Hamza Chahid was second, followed by Soheil Boufrizi, Antonin Saint Peyre and Bastian Mrochen
- Jakob Rettschlag and Luis Hernandez-Perez finished sixth and seventh to cap the dominant victory
Upset of the Year
Men's Soccer defeats #4 Limestone
- #4 Limestone cape to Pride Park with a 7-0-1 record, ranked fourth in the country
- Pablo Pozos found the back of the net off a Zach Panagiotou assist in the 53rd minute
- The 'Dogs kept the Saints off the board the rest of the night, getting a pair of Aleksa Janjic saves
Football vs. #7 Lenoir-Rhyne
- LR came to Irwin Belk Stadium 8-0 on the year, ranked 7th in the nation
- The Bears took a 34-30 lead with a minute to go, but Wingate had the answer
- Brooks Bentley's 75-yard TD strike to Evan McCray put the 'Dogs on top for good
Men's Basketball defeats #23 Lincoln Memorial
- The 'Dogs took down #23 LMU 76-73 in Cuddy Arena in what turned out to be key in the SAC race
- A 13-3 run in the final three minutes, highlighted by a pair of Josh Massey threes was the difference
- Massey had 25 points, Kendall Taylor added 22; Donell Nixon had 14 points and five steals
Women's Basketball defeats #13 Catawba in SAC Tourney Semifinals
- Wingate handed #13 Catawba two of its first three losses of the season, including the SAC semifinals
- WU jumped out to a 25-13 lead in the first, then outscored Catawba 28-19 in the fourth to win 90-77
- Jaia Wilson had a career-high 20 points; Emily Hege added 17 while Trinity Breedlove had 13 points
Women's Golf defeats #3 Findlay & #4 Anderson to win Surratt Memorial title
- The 'Dogs took home the 16-team Surratt Invitational that included two of the top four teams in D2
- A final round 289 was enough to rally past #3 Findlay and hold off #4 Anderson by one and two shots
- Hailey McLaughlin won the individual title; Jess Brown was third as they shot 71 and 72 in round three
Women's Tennis takes down #10 Columbus State
- #29 Wingate picked up a big 4-3 regional victory over perennial national power #10 Columbus State
- CSU won the doubles point, but Eva Siska and Chloe Kosmrlj rolled to wins at one and two singles
- Suzuka Sambyakugari won at three singles; Claudia Vallejos won in three sets at five singles to clinch it
Best Comeback Win
Volleyball vs. Augusta
- Wingate and Augusta met in a key early-season regional showdown on opening weekend in Florida
- The Jaguars won the first two sets 25-23, looking to be in shape for a key opening week victory
- The 'Dogs won 25-19 in set three and four to go to a fifth set, which they won 15-11 to cap the win
- Gabby Saye had 18 kills; Maggie Young and Amber Rowoldt added 16 and 14 kills, respectively
Men's Basketball vs. Carson-Newman
- In a season full of wild wins, the home victory against Carson-Newman was at the top for MBB
- C-N built a 19-point lead 11 minutes in, but the 'Dogs chipped away the rest of the day
- The lead was still 10 with 7:08 to go, but WU ended the game on a 16-5 run
- A Donell Nixon stepback three with two seconds left gave WU its first lead since a 6-5 advantage
Women's Basketball vs. #4 Catawba
- The Bulldogs found themselves trailing #4 Catawba 20-4 just seven minutes into the game
- WU would outscore the Indians 74-45 the final 33 minutes to pick up the big 78-65 victory
- Wingate won the second quarter 20-11, then the third 27-14 while leading by as many as 16
- Emily Hege had 18 points; Laney Beale had 15 points, Jaia Wilson and Trinity Breedlove had 13 each
Softball vs. Emmanuel
- The Bulldogs faced Emmanuel in February and trailed 7-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh
- A Savanna Brooks RBI single and Heaven Maness RBI double helped cut the lead to one with two outs
- WU scored its fifth run of the seventh when Alyssa Hall scored as Katy Kahlich reached on an error
- Hannah Stevens had the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to cap the extra-inning win

Men's Cross Country wins National Championship
- WUXC claimed the third NCAA team title in Wingate history, taking home the title in Joplin, Mo.
- Hamza Chahid was fourth, while Soheil Boufrizi was 10th and Ricardo Barbosa finished 24th
- Cas Kopmels and Titouan Le Grix added top-30 finishes as WU edged Colorado Mines by nine points
Women's Cross Country wins NCAA Southeast Regionals
- The 'Dogs captured their second straight regional title in dominant fashion, winning by 23 points
- Mollie Scott was second and Sira Bo was third; Ona Alonso and Tatjana Mense were sixth and seventh

Men's Basketball wins OT thriller against Catawba in battle of SAC unbeatens
- A Donell Nixon three with 11 seconds left in regulation sent the Bulldogs and Indians to overtime
- Nixon poured in 13 points in overtime as the 'Dogs held off Catawba for a big 93-90 SAC win
- Nixon had 34 points and six assists; Corbin Pack added 16 while Vontrez Roberts had 14 points

- WU left no doubt in the title game, outscoring C-N 25-8 in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead

Both Swim teams roll to SAC titles

- Chahid won the national title in the 5,000 Meters, the third NCAA championship of his career

- The SAC Tourney MVP averaged 17 points per game to lead Wingate past LMU, Catawba and C-N

Hamza Chahid, Cross Country / Track & Field
- Chahid won the national title in the 5,000 Meters at the Indoor championships; third national title
- Finished fourth at the Cross Country National Championships, leading the 'Dogs to the title
- Earned first team All-American honors with fourth-place finish in the 3,000 Meters at Indoors
Marquise Fleming, Football
- SAC and D2CCA Region Defensive Player of the Year, leading the nation in sacks
- AFCA, D2CCA and D2 AP first team All-American; 63 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 14 sacks
- National runner-up for Gene Upshaw Award, going to the top Defensive Lineman in the nation
Willie Grieco, Lacrosse
- Leads the nation in assists for the third straight season, ranking fourth in points
- Ranks second in all-time D2 history in career points and assists
- Preseason National Player of the Year; two-time National Attackman of the Year
Donell Nixon, Basketball
- Earned SAC Player of the Year honors; first team All-SAC and All-Region

Lucie Andrews, Swimming
- SAC Swimmer of the Year and SAC Swimmer of the Meet for SAC champion Bulldogs
- Won SA 50 & 500 Free along with 800 Free Relay; runner-up in four events
- First All-American in 400 Free Relay & 800 Free Relay; three honorable mention AA swims
Savanna Brooks, Softball
- Brooks leads the SAC with 18 homers, breaking her own single-season WU record
- Second in the SAC in RBI, total bases; third in slugging percentage, fifth in runs and sixth in doubles
- Hitting .366 for the SAC champs, ranking sixth in the nation in homers; WU all-time HR leader
Valerie Daehler, Track & Field
- Won the high jump at the SAC Indoor championships, helping WU earn the title
- USTFCCCA All-Region high jumper for the Bulldogs
- Earned second team All-American honors with her 11th-place finish at the D2 Indoor Championships
Julia Kekkonen, Triathlon
- Kekkenon led the Bulldogs to a region championship and runner-up finish at nationals
- She finished third among D2 racers to lead the way at the East Regionals
- Kekkonen was the number two D2 finisher at nationals to lead Wingate's runner-up showing
Leah Knowles, Lacrosse
- SAC Midfielder of the Year; third straight SAC Player of the Year award
- Two-time All-American is WU all-time leader in goals, points, draw controls and caused turnovers
- Second in the SAC in goals and CTs, third in draw controls and fourth in points
Chloe Kosmrlj, Tennis
- Kosmrlj is the 18th-ranked singles player in the nation for the SAC champion Bulldogs
- Went through the regular season 19-0 in singles play without dropping a set
- 18-2 record in doubles play; First Team All-SAC singles and doubles honoree
Maggie Young, Volleyball
- SAC Player of the Year; AVCA & D2CCA Region Player of the Year, SAC Scholar-Athlete
