‘Dogs down Wolves 13-7 to move within one win of championship series

Hartsville, S.C.----For the third time in the last two days, the Wingate University Bulldogs staved off elimination, prevailing 13-7 against Newberry College on day three of the 2024 South Atlantic Conference baseball tournament. The victory sets up one more game between the Bulldogs and Wolves Sunday night at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the championship series (Watch / Live Stats).

- Wingate out-hit Newberry 15-14
- The Bulldogs had eight of the 10 extra-base hits including both homers
- The Wolves left 12 on base; the 'Dogs stranded nine
- Newberry had all five stolen bases

FIRST INNING

- A walk and Harris single put runners on the corners
- Ishmael's RBI single got the 'Dogs on the board
- Jacob LeBron's RBI single in the bottom of the frame tied it at one

THIRD INNING

- Harris ripped a one-out single up the middle
- Barnett followed with a two-run shot to left to put the 'Dogs on top 3-1
- Adams followed with a towering solo shot to right to extend the lead to three

FOURTH INNING

- Clark led things off with a double, then scored on a Williams-Rhem RBI double
- Harris lined a two-run double to left to make it 7-1
- Ishamel's RBI double plated Harris to give Wingate a seven-run lead

FIFTH INNING

- Clark drew a leadoff walk, then scored on a Courville RBI double, making it 9-1
- An RBI single from Henry Gibson capped a two-run frame for Newberry, cutting the lead to six

SEVENTH INNING

- Clark and Rhodes led off the inning with walks, then moved up on Courville's sacrifice
- Harris followed with a two-run single, then scored on an error to make it 12-3
- RBI singles from Jomar Lugo and Bryson Nuckols in the bottom of the frame cut the lead to five

EIGHTH INNING

- A KadeFaircloth RBI single and Lugo RBI groundout made it 12-7
- Walls got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat, leaving a pair of runners on

NINTH INNING

- Courville drew a leadoff walk, then scored on Barnett's RBI single, making the final margin 13-7

WRAPUP

- Jonathan Velazquez got the win, allowing two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out two
- Walls earned the two-inning save, striking out three without allowing a hit
- Ethan LeBron took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in three innings of work

UP NEXT

- The Bulldogs and Wolves meet at 6 p.m. Sunday night in the final game of the weekend
- The winner will advance to the three-game championship series next weekend
