Bulldogs roll to 30-3 victory at Anderson for third straight win

Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs went on the road and held Anderson University to just 171 yards of offense Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 30-3 victory in South Atlantic Conference football action. Wingate wins its third straight, moving to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Trojans fall to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Wingate had 212 passing yards and 164 rushing yards for 376 total yards
- Anderson had 101 passing yards and 70 rushing yards for the 171 total
- The 'Dogs doubled up the Trojans with 24 first downs compared to AU's 12
- The Bulldogs were four-for-10 on third down; Anderson went four-for-13
- WU scored on all five red zone trips; the Trojans scored on one of two chances

FIRST QUARTER

- Wingate forced a three-and-out to start the game, then took over at the WU 37
- Clinesmith's 27-yard reception got the 'Dogs to the 28
- Bonesteel drilled a 45-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs the early 3-0 lead
- Another quick series by the defense set the 'Dogs up at their own 25
- A 13-yard Pugh run and 14-yard Jackson grab got Wingate to midfield
- Holmes found Appling for 11 yards to get inside the 25
- A Bonesteel 38-yard field goal put the 'Dogs on top 6-0 at the 2:03 mark
- The Bulldogs closed out the frame with another three and out
- The final play of the quarter was a 13-yard run from Appling to get to the AU 22

SECOND QUARTER

- Holmes found Tate to start the second quarter for an eight-yard gain to get inside the 15
- Pugh punched it in from six yards out, making it 13-0 with 12:56 to go
- Anderson was able to get it into the red zone on the ensuing drive
- The 'Dogs stopped the Trojans at the 16 to hold Anderson to a field goal
- Jaylin Brown blocked the field goal to keep the Trojans off the board
- Wingate followed with an 81-yard touchdown drive
- The drive started with a 12-yard Tate reception and seven-yard Appling run
- A Pugh eight-yard run and Himes 17-yard reception got the Bulldogs to the 24
- Holmes hit Pugh from 15 yards out for a touchdown with 35 seconds left
- The 'Dogs took a 20-0 lead into halftime

THIRD QUARTER

- Wingate fumbled the opening kickoff, setting AU up at the WU 19
- An Elijah Swett 23-yard field goal got the Trojans on the board
- The Bulldogs responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive
- Pugh's 24-yard run got the 'Dogs into AU territory
- Holmes connected with Himes for 30 yards, getting it to the 13
- Pugh scored from two yards out to give the Bulldogs a 27-3 advantage at the 7:03 mark
- Wingate forced another Anderson punt, but the punt pinned the 'Dogs inside their own 10
- Holmes connected with Mays for 39 yards to get to the AU 35
- Holmes hit Himes for 15 yards on third and five, getting WU to the five yard line to finish the quarter

FOURTH QUARTER

- Bonesteel's 20-yard field goal gave the Bulldogs a 30-3 lead with 13:28 remaining
- Those would be the final points of the afternoon for either team
