Fast times help No. 5 Wingate take 220.5-94.5 SAC triumph over No. 17 Carson-Newman

Wingate, N.C.----The No. 5 Wingate men's swimming team established four new pool records on the way to a 220.5-94.5 South Atlantic Conference victory over visiting No. 17 Carson-Newman at the Wingate Natatorium Saturday. Sophomore Tymofii Chemeryk helped set two new standards by contributing to two WU triumphs.
 
Balanced attack boosts Bulldogs
 
Chemeryk won the 200 Freestyle with a new pool record time of 1:38.08. He concluded the meet by swimming the second leg of Wingate's victorious 400 Freestyle Relay quartet. The 'Dogs set a new pool standard with their time of 2:59.00. Chemeryk was joined by sophomore Vladimir Krstulovic and juniors Manoel Silva and Anton Witzell. Silva joined the individual victory parade with his win in the 50 Freestyle (20.86).
 
US Open competitors set new standards with victories
 
Fresh from their experiences at the US Open swimming championships, sophomore Fernando Dehaudt and graduate student Joel Thompson each set new pool standards with individual wins. Dehaudt won the 1000 Freestyle, thanks to his pool record time of 9:17.37. Thompson followed suit, touching first in the 400 Individual Medley with his pool-record time of 3:58.22.
 
Cariboni grabs third individual win of weekend to lead 'Dogs
 
Freshman Nicolo Cariboni earned his team-best third individual win of the weekend, touching first in the 200 Breaststroke with his time of 2:03.35. On Friday, he won the 200 Individual Medley (1:53.58) and the 100 Breaststroke (56.16). Cariboni also added a 200 Medley Relay silver to his Saturday haul.
 
On the afternoon, Wingate had six gold medals, seven silver medals and five bronze medals. Included in this total are podium sweeps in the 1000 Freestyle (Dehaudt and juniors Damir Ipkaev and Giacomo Pietrini) and the 200 Breaststroke (Cariboni, freshman Filippo Tabladini and Thompson).
 
Up Next for the No. 5 Wingate men's swimming team
 
The Wingate swimming teams completed first semester final exams Friday; second semester classes begin Thursday, January 8. The Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Day with a special ceremony on Saturday, January 17. The South Atlantic Conference championship meet is February 4-7 in Kingsport, Tennessee. The four-day event will be contested at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.
